Position description

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is seeking a motivated intern to join its Food, Peace and Security (FPS) team. The role offers a unique opportunity to support a new research collaboration involving GIZ, WFP and UNICEF in the Sahel region. The intern will contribute to document reviews, interview analysis, and liaison with key partners. 

Main tasks

Working closely with the FPS team and external partners, the intern will:

  • Conduct literature reviews and analyse project documentation;
  • Assist in preparing and transcribing remote interviews and support transcript analysis;
  • Contribute to drafting research progress reports;
  • Support the preparation of project partner meetings;
  • Support preparations for fieldwork in Mauritania;
  • Assist in the day-to-day coordination of the project.

Internship details

This full-time, on-site internship will start as soon as possible and run for 6 months.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. 

  • Applicants must be part of a university internship scheme (or connected to an organisation), have insurance through that university/organisation, and have a contact person (e.g., an educational facilitator).
  • The internship is not remunerated and housing, travel or any other expenses cannot be reimbursed.
  • The intern will be based at the SIPRI office, in Solna (Stockholm), with the possibility to occasionally work remotely.
  • The intern will be mentored by an assigned supervisor and work closely with the Food, Peace and Security Pogram team. Learning goals will be reflected in the assignment of tasks wherever possible.

Qualifications and personal attributes

The candidate should at a minimum meet the following requirements:

  • Currently studying or recently finished a degree in a field relevant to peace and conflict, development, food security, climate change, political science or international relations and/or proven work experience in these topics.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Collaborative mindset.
  • A proven interest in politics, international relations and humanitarian work in fragile settings.

Experience and learning

Throughout the duration of the intern will have the opportunity to learn and experience a range of tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Gaining hands-on experience in coordinating and implementing a large multi-year, multi-agency research project.
  • Developing qualitative research skills, including how to run and analyse research interviews.
  • Acquiring knowledge about how UN agencies and partners operate in complex humanitarian settings.
