Interpretative Unit Support Intern

NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

The chosen candidate will join an experienced and creative team focused on history museums and historic sites under the stewardship of NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation-Bureau of Historic Sites. Their role would be to support the research, writing, and development of historic exhibits, interpretative signages, online programs, ArcGIS story maps, and other elements for the multiyear initiative Enslavement to Freedom 1627-1827-2027, and the permanent exhibit for John Jay Homestead State Historic Site, currently under development by the Interpretative Unit of the Bureau of Historic Sites, NYS-OPRHP.

Working with the Interpreter of African American History and other members of the Interpretative Unit and Bureau of Historic Sites staff to develop several different exhibits or portions of various projects related to the initiative including developing content for professional development programs, digital exhibits, and other related interpretative materials.

  • Research the presence of enslaved and free Africans and people of African descent within New Netherland/New York colonial period and the federal period of New York as a state, 17th – mid 19th century.
  • Research and develop various areas of content for the permanent exhibit at John Jay Homestead SHS.
  • Develop working storylines that can be transformed into exhibit panels and/or ArcGIS story maps related to the above subjects.
  • Write exhibit material, based on the research.
  • Search digital image databases for graphic elements to include in the exhibit designs.
  • Ability to work independently when assigned a particular task.
  • When not engaged in these two projects, to work with other Interpretative team members in both research and writing for other history-based exhibits, and interpretive signs used within the State’s Park system.
  • Team hours Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 4:00pm
  • Must be able to work on site at Peebles Island Resource Center (challenging local public transportation

Job Length: Part-time, Temporary

Pay: $23.43 per hour

Expected hours: 20 per week
