Operational Context
Indonesia has not yet acceded to either the 1951 Refugee Convention or its 1967 Protocol, nor to the 1954 or 1961 Statelessness Conventions. In the absence of a comprehensive national legal framework and administrative arrangements, UNHCR undertakes registration, Refugee Status Determination (RSD) and other assistance under its mandate and ensures access to fair and efficient asylum procedures for those arriving in Indonesia and seeking asylum.
As of April 2024, 12,772 refugees and asylum-seekers are registered with UNHCR Indonesia. Total 53 different nationalities are represented among the population under the protection of UNHCR in Indonesia. Majority of them are from Afghanistan, followed by Myanmar, Somalia, Yemen and Iraq. The population is dispersed in various locations throughout the country; most of them reside in urban areas, mainly in Jakarta and surrounding areas, and a significant number are accommodated in IOM-run community housing throughout the country.
Duties and Responsibilities
Subject to availability of funds and approval of the Government of Indonesia, UNHCR is interested to hire qualified interpreter(s) in Farsi language who is fluent in English. Under the direct supervision of the Senior Protection Assistant in the Registration sub-Unit and the overall supervision of Protection Officer and Senior Protection Officer, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
1. Interpret oral conversations, discussions, and interviews from Farsi into English and/or Bahasa Indonesia;
2. Translate documents and other information from newspapers, written reports, magazines, etc. from Farsi into English; translation from Indonesian into English and vice-versa;
3. Undertake the registration process for new asylum-seekers and other registration-related tasks, as necessary;
4. Perform other clerical duties within the Registration sub-unit (e.g. filing)
5. Travel on missions to field locations for interpreting, registration and other assistance, as needed;
6. Respond to queries relating to the area of responsibility;
7. Perform any other duties as required.
Qualifications/Requirements
Education: Minimum completion of secondary education with certification, but preferably Interpretation/Translation, Language, Business Administration, Secretarial Work, or another related field.
Managerial Competencies: Political and Organizing Awareness.
Experience: Three (3) years’ experience in relevant work area. Experience working in a multi-cultural environment or international context is an added asset.
Nationality: Citizen of Indonesia; non-citizen with Indonesian permanent residence.
Languages: Excellent knowledge of Farsi, English and/or Bahasa Indonesia (written and spoken).
Desirable Skills in: Interpretation/translation; communication; computers; good knowledge of UNHCR’s work; ability to work effectively in a team.

Interpreter Assistant
Organizational Setting and Work Relationships
The Interpreter Assistant normally report to a higher level local or international staff. The incumbent supports the operation with translation and interpretation related activities.
All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. Duties
– Interprets and/or translates from newspapers, written reports, magazines etc.
– Interprets oral conversations, discussions and interviews especially when attending meetings with high ranking officials, diplomats and others.
– Travels with international staff on their missions to the field for interpretation and other assistance, as needed.
– Arranges meetings, both internal and external, some involving high-ranking officials and takes minutes/notes.
– Meets official personnel at the airport and facilitates immigration and customs formalities.
– Responds to queries relating to the area of responsibility.
– Support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility. Ensure decision making in risk based in the functional area of work. Raise risks, issues and concerns to a supervisor or to relevant functional colleague(s).
– Perform other related duties as required.
