The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with National Park Service, is recruiting 3 Interpretative Research Associates to support Buffalo National River at the Tyler Bend Visitor Center in St. Joe, Arkansas and the Buffalo Point Ranger Station in Yellville, Arkansas.

Under the direction of the NPS project lead, the selected candidate will: 

  • Conduct basic research of topics for the purpose of providing interpretive programs, both orally and/or in writing. 
  • Present a variety of formal and informal programs including orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs. Informs visitors about park facilities and resources. 
  • Provides a wide range of services to visitors and provides information about river and weather conditions, highway routes, campgrounds, and concessioner facilities. In performing this duty, the selected candidate is responsible for providing current, accurate information concerning the NPS and other surrounding areas of interest and explaining the area’s recreational opportunities. 

Duties are performed onsite at locations designated by the park, e.g., visitor centers, campgrounds, historical sites, amphitheaters, etc. Learns Park resources by reviewing published maps, park research materials, and other documents previously prepared by park rangers and other professionals and by talking with park staff. Provides assistance in connection with onetime or annual celebrations related to the programs and themes of the park and assists in the operations of special events. Operates a variety of audiovisual and other equipment used in connection with interpretive material, e.g., projectors, cassettes, and video equipment. 

Contract Timeline:

  • 17-week appointment beginning in July.
  • Full-time position, 40-hrs wk.

Location:

  • Tyler Bend Visitor Center, Buffalo National River; St. Joe, Arkansas.
  • Buffalo Point Ranger Station, Buffalo National River; Yellville, Arkansas.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Wage: $16.95/hr.

Job Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge of paddling, hiking, and natural resource topics.
  • Excellent organizational skills. 
  • Is an independent self-starter.
  • Reliable, team-player with strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a complex and dynamic setting.
  • Possession of a valid, state-issued driver’s license.
