Invertebrate Identification Technician

The University of Rhode Island is seeking one highly motivated full-time research technician to assist on a master’s project investigating American woodcock diet composition using stable isotopes in Rhode Island state management areas. Duties will include lab/field invertebrate identification and sorting, capturing and banding adults, attaching VHF/GPS transmitters, and data entry. 

The ideal candidate will have experience with invertebrate and insect identification to family taxonomy levels, bird handling and banding. 

Must have a positive attitude, exceptional patience, problem solving skills, enjoy handling/identifying invertebrates and insects, enjoy lab work, and be willing to occasionally work late in the evening and days in the field if necessary. 

The technician will work 40 hours/week, some weekend work may be required with bird capture. This position is from the beginning of April to mid-August 2025. 

Start and end date are somewhat flexible. Housing may be provided upon request if necessary. At times the use of a personal vehicle may be required with mileage reimbursement at $0.62 on the mile (as of October 1st 2022). 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Experience and a strong interest in identifying insects to family taxonomy levels.
  • Prior field experience involving bird handling strongly preferred.
  • Must be capable of working alone in the lab or field and possess a good work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (day and evening work)
  • Insect identification
  • Bird capture, handling, and transmitter attachment experience
  • Ability to navigate on foot or in a vehicle using GPS and/or a compass
  • Close attention to detail
  • Legible note-taking
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
