Brief description of the organization
Yazda is a non-governmental, non-profit organization established in 2014 in response to the genocide committed by the self-declared Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (“ISIL”) against the Yazidis and other communities in Iraq and Syria.
Project Background:
The Documentation Program was launched in October 2015 to document the genocide committed against the Yazidis. Since then, the Documentation team has been collecting evidence in the form of witness and survivor interviews, and documenting crime scenes in and around Sinjar, Nineveh Province, where the genocide took place. The mandate of the project is to build an accurate historical record and evidence base to support prosecutions, transition justice mechanisms, advocacy and accountability for the crimes committed by ISIL against Yazidis.
Job Purpose:
The Investigations Officer will support the mandate of the program by gathering evidence to build an evidence base on crimes committed by ISIL.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Investigations Coordinator and of the Project Manager, the Investigation Officer is expected to fulfill the following duties: ● Investigate, document and collect evidence on crimes committed by ISIL against the Yazidi population including war crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity, sexual violence and other crimes, in line with international best practice standards and internal SOPs ● Interview victims, witnesses and survivors of crimes committed by ISIL in accordance with an applied survivor-centred and trauma-informed approach ● Conduct field missions to document crime scenes in Sinjar and any other assigned location; including GPS locations, phone towers, kill sites, mass graves, captivity sites, ISIL headquarters and destroyed cultural sites. ● Accurately record all information gained from interviews and the field missions using established tools and store on the secure internal database ● Work in line with the Code of Conduct and Internal SOPs at all times, treating all collected data and information in accordance with strict confidentiality requirements ● Work with the Legal Advocacy Team to support analysis of data, case building and establish links between ISIL members, crime sites and crimes committed ● Undertake research on public facing resources, including social media, to link and triangulate evidence/data for case building and analysis ● Coordinate with relevant external actors, including the Yazidi community, other NGOs, UN agencies and government authorities, to facilitate best practice investigations ● Support survivor and community-centred excavation and exhumations where needed, conducting awareness raising workshops and coordination with relevant stakeholders ● Undertake capacity building to strengthen knowledge and skills in carrying out high quality investigations ● Attend meetings, seminars and workshops as required ● Complete accurate reporting of activities and ensure that program targets are met in line with donor requirements ● Carry out all duties required for HR, security or logistics purposes within the scope of the program ● Carry out other relevant duties that are assigned by the Investigations Coordinator, Field Supervisor or Project Manager

Qualifications & Preferred Skills
Qualifications and Skills:
Education: • Bachelor’s degree in law, sociology, anthropology, political science, international relations, history, or other relevant disciplines. Prior knowledge of the Yazidi culture, faith, and traditions is preferable. • Experience: Prior experience in a non-governmental organization or international organization is an asset. • Knowledge of survivor-centered principles and do no harm principles is required. • Strict adherence to confidentiality clause to ensure the protection of all witnesses and survivors. • Strong interpersonal skills and flexibility, responsibility, integrity, teamwork, self-motivation, and preparedness to work off-time. • Ability and willingness to work with people from different ethnic groups, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. • Knowledge about Sinjar and Syria area is an asset. • Contextual knowledge about the Yazidi genocide is an asset. • Able to prioritize work, multi-task, and meet deadlines. • Proficiency in Arabic and Kurmanji-Shingali is a must. Basic oral and written skills in English are required. • Experience in using digital cameras; and basic computer skills are required. |
