Organization Mission

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It supports governments and migrants by offering services and policy guidance to ensure migration is managed safely, responsibly, and with dignity; contributing to development, humanitarian response, and the protection of human rights.

In the Caribbean, migration has been central to shaping the region’s identity. From the tragedy of slavery to today’s vibrant diasporas and multi-generational migrant communities, mobility remains both a cornerstone of society and an enduring aspiration.

Today, the region faces growing challenges such as climate change, demographic shifts, and labor shortages among them. Migration can serve as a vital tool to enhance resilience, foster inclusive development, and support effective governance.

Composed largely of small island developing states (SIDS), the Caribbean has unique vulnerabilities. Economies are dependent on imports, tourism, and remittances, with populations clustered in coastal areas. This makes countries especially vulnerable to climate-related disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and sea level rise. Without stronger investment in preparedness and adaptation, the risk of displacement is likely to grow.

At the same time, ageing populations and ongoing outward migration, especially to the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., are creating labor gaps in key sectors. While CARICOM’s intra-regional labor mobility offers solutions, attracting external labor may become necessary, marking a shift for a region traditionally seen as one of origin.

Context

The document outlines a Regional Action Plan for Integrating Human Mobility into Comprehensive Disaster Management Programming across Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Participating States (PS). The Regional Plan of Action is one component of the Fostering Collaborative Approaches to Disaster-Preparedness in the Caribbean project, an initiative led by the International Organization for Migration. It builds on work to advance a coordinated response to human mobility within the context of climate change and disasters ongoing in the Caribbean region for the past decade. To enhance usability and uptake at the regional and national levels across the Caribbean, the document requires professional layout and graphic design where relevant to enhance clarity, and visual appeal.

Key Responsibilities

In close collaboration with the Project Manager, activity Focal Point and Communications Team, the Online Volunteer will:

– Design the visual layout of the Action Plan in line with IOM branding guidelines
– Support the structuring of content to ensure clarity, readability, and visual coherence and integrate graphics as necessary
– Ensure the final document is suitable for both digital dissemination and print use

Required Skills and Experience

* Strong graphic design and layout skills aligned with IOM branding
* Ability to structure content for clarity, readability, and visual coherence
* Experience using design tools (e.g. InDesign, Canva, Adobe Suite)
* Ability to integrate graphics into technical/policy documents
* Knowledge of IOM/UN style guides and consistency in terminology and formatting
* Ability to produce print‑ and digital‑ready publication materials
* Strong coordination and communication skills with technical teams
