The University of Groningen (RUG) is looking for an IP Specialist in the Research & Impact cluster of the university.
As IP Specialist, you will supervise new and existing projects together with colleagues from the IP Team regarding intellectual property such as patents, copyright and trademarks of the RUG and the UMCG. The IP Team consists of various specialists. The ideal candidate is complementary to other members of the team. Together with your team colleagues you will answer IP questions from researchers and students from both the university and the UMCG by applying your specific knowledge of patents and other forms of IP.
You will contribute to the management and expansion of the RUG/UMCG IP portfolio by realizing new IP protection, with the goal of using that IP for societal impact. In addition, the management of current IP will be one of your responsibilities.
Within the Research & Impact cluster you will work for the Knowledge Utilization and Entrepreneurship domain (KUE). Together with the other colleagues within the IP Team you are accountable to the coordinator of the IP Team.
You will work closely with colleagues from other parts of KUE, the Business Generator Groningen and RUG Ventures. Your common goal is that academic knowledge be made available as quickly and effectively as possible available to society through new or existing ventures.
Organisation
The Research & Impact cluster is one of five clusters within University Services. University Services supports education, research and operations and thus fulfills its role within the RUG as a facilitating, supporting and advising service.
The Research & Impact cluster comprises four domains with the joint mission of advising and support the Executive Board, the faculties and researchers of our university in the achieving research excellence and maximizing the value of knowledge to society through successful valorization.
The four domains work together to provide the policy development and support needed for that shared mission. Within that mission, each domain has a primary area of focus. KUE is one of these domains and works to generate economic growth and societal impact through the exploitation of scientific knowledge. It has a special focus on some of the private activities of the university.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone with the qualities to take on these challenges:
• screening and scouting new, potential inventions within both RUG and UMCG
• evaluating inventions for novelty, in consultation with researchers/inventors, and advising on patentability
• maintaining contacts with external patent offices
• assist in establishing IP protection
• manage the patent database of RUG/UMCG
• contribute to professional management of the RUG/UMCG Patent portfolio
• stimulate patent awareness among RUG/UMCG researchers and inform researchers about IP issues and policies
• support the licensing and negotiation process
• contribute to patent/IE workshops and trainings within RUG/UMCG.
Furthermore, the position requires that you have:
• academic work and thinking level, with an engineering, life sciences or medical background whereby, a completed PhD in one of these fields is an advantage
• experience in the field of Patents and Intellectual Property in general is highly recommended
• willingness to attend a multi-day course on the basics of Intellectual Property
• excellent verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and English (level C1)
• affinity for applied and basic research as well an innovation
• skills to work in a structured and process-oriented manner.
Conditions of employment
We offer in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement of Dutch Universities:
• a salary depending on education and experience of minimum € 3,226 to maximum € 5,090 (salary scale 10) gross per month for full-time work. The position is classified in the UFO profile for employee knowledge valorization
• 8% vacation allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus over the annual gross income
• the option to choose a 36-, 38- or 40-hour work week (assuming full-time employment). A minimum of 29 vacation days with, in the case of full-time employment, 12 additional vacation days
• good training activities
• initially a one-year contract to assess whether you meet the job requirements. If you perform well, an employment contract for an indefinite period will follow.
Hybrid working is possible within the University. This position will however require presence at the office for the majority of the working hours. The position is based in Groningen.
