About UK Assessment & Qualifications: We are responsible for the delivery of nearly 4 million examination results per annum, including A-Level, GCSE, BTEC and T-levels for students in UK and International centres. Our in-house systems process every learner from registration to marking and certification, in a highly regulated business. We currently operate a hybrid estate of predominantly bespoke systems, with an ongoing strategic transformation programme to migrate from on-prem to cloud based, cost effective, scalable, and resilient services.
About the job
To assist in the delivery of business-critical software supporting the company’s qualifications systems and the on-going IT strategy. To analyse requirements, design, code and test complex programs within the system to agreed standards, provide specifications and general assistance within the team and the wider IT group.
Key Accountabilities
Design and implement systems based on outline specifications provided by the iSeries/EMS Systems Manager, Analysts and key business users.
To devise unit and systems tests
To ensure that all programs are documented to the required standard.
To undertake the necessary development work for some of the most complex and critical parts of the system
To engage with and advise programming staff on program design and construction techniques, or any other such assistance as may be deemed appropriate.
To take full responsibility for individual projects which may involve new or existing suites of programs covering the full project life cycle and staff management.
Confer with and advise user departments on all matters relating to Edexcel’s general qualifications awarding system.
To assist in assessing the impact of business developments on existing systems
To assist with training matters within the team
To maintain continuing knowledge of programming languages such as RPG/400, free-format RPG/IV (with ILE) and CL and acquire new skills as the on-going systems development requires.
Any other reasonable tasks as directed by the iSeries/EMS Systems Manager
Required Skills & Experience
Programming Languages: Knowledge of programming languages RPG/CL/DDS and SQL are necessary, while knowledge of other common languages such as Java/C# would be helpful.
Operating Systems: Understanding of the IBM i/iSeries/AS400 development and operating environment is necessary.
Database Management: Proficiency in IBM i/iSeries/AS400 database design and implementation is important.
Tools and Utilities: Familiarity with tools and utilities specific to the IBM i/iSeries/AS400 environment for tasks such as application development, work management, database management, debugging, and performance monitoring.
Networking and Security: Knowledge of corporate networking and security processes to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of data.
Problem-solving Skills: Ability to interpret and troubleshoot IBM i/iSeries/AS400 applications and systems efficiently.
Documentation and Communication: Effective communication skills to document processes, procedures, and communicate with team members and stakeholders.
Heterogeneous Integration: Understanding of techniques and tools for integrating IBM i/iSeries/AS400 systems with other modern technologies and platforms is important.
Compliance and Regulations: Awareness of industry regulations and compliance standards relevant to the organization’s operations, such as GDPR and SOX.
Continuous Learning: Technology evolves over time, so a willingness to stay updated with the latest developments and best practices is important.
Job Location and Hours
The role is aligned to our Bangalore or Chennai offices in India, working a 45 hour week, or our Manchester, Rotherham, or Oxford offices in the UK, working a 37.5 hour week. Our Rotherham office is located at Junction 1 of the M18.
All our roles are hybrid working; our current policy requires our team to visit their base office no more than once a week, and with the possibility of occasional business travel to other Pearson sites. Candidates must be a suitable commute from their base office as our office presence policy may change to require more frequent presence in 2024.
For this role there is a requirement to provide occasional out of hours support during business critical periods.
