The Opportunity

Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) is on the lookout for an enthusiastic and skilled IT Field Services Technician III to become a pivotal part of our Field Services team within the Network Services domain. As an IT Field Services Technician III, you will play a crucial role in installing, repairing, and maintaining the physical and electronic components of our diverse network infrastructure. Your expertise will span across wired, wireless, and voice networks, in addition to performing moves, adds, and changes to the existing infrastructure and equipment. Under very general supervision, your day-to-day will involve:

  • Receiving and prioritizing service orders for simple to moderately complex data network and voice communications installations, moves, adds, changes, and repairs.
  • Gathering electronics, tools, equipment, and other supplies needed to complete the work.
  • Coordinating with CIT’s specialized engineering teams, local IT support, and customers to ensure seamless service delivery.
  • Hands-on work with data network and voice communications hardware, including but not limited to ethernet switches, wireless access points, voice handsets, emergency phones, and UPS Units.
  • Addressing and troubleshooting performance issues, service outages, and collaborating with senior technicians and engineers to devise effective solutions.
  • Managing cabling infrastructure tasks with precision, from pulling, splicing, and terminating to proper labeling and documentation.
  • Assist in deploying new infrastructure for key University IT projects.

Prepare to engage in fieldwork across diverse campus locations beyond just the typical office locations, from bustling construction sites to serene outdoor settings. Your safety is our priority; comprehensive safety training and gear will be provided. A valid NYS driver’s license is essential as you will navigate the campus in a university vehicle, contributing to the vibrant life on campus. This position requires rotational 24/7 on-call responsibilities throughout each calendar year.

What We Need

All applicants must include a resume and cover letter for full consideration.

  • Associate’s degree and 2 to 4 years of relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience installing and servicing electronic components for wired, wireless, and voice systems.
  • Experience pulling, splicing, terminating, and servicing copper and fiber infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of telecommunications, data networking, and structured wiring installation principles.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards such as TIA/EIA 568-B, single-mode fiber optic cabling.
  • Ability to read and comprehend engineering documents and then implement designs to specification in the field.
  • Ability to collaborate with a variety of customers in a professional manner with a strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to successfully handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • Experience working in Higher Education / R1 Research Universities 
  • Experience with Aruba Networks wireless and wired switching platforms. 
  • Familiarity with Pinnacle / PCR360 or similar cable management systems 
  • Familiarity with Team Dynamix, or similar ticket-tracking systems
