The position oversees and manages implementation of disability accommodations across the statewide Undergraduate Medical Education program at IU School of Medicine that have been approved by IU School of Medicine Council for Accommodations Review (CAR) and Indiana University Office of Accessible Educational Services (AES) at IU-Indianapolis. This includes initial implementation and ongoing case management, as well as training for faculty and staff in disabilities accommodations and accessibility. This role is instrumental in creating promoting a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive co-curricular learning environment. 


Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Directs IU School of Medicine’s Disability Accommodations and Accessibility Resource Team (DART), and manage and serve as ex-officio member of IUSM Council for Accommodations Review. Upon approval, the IU School of Medicine Disability Accommodations and Accessibility Resource Team oversees implementation and ongoing management of approved accommodations in collaboration with appropriate students, educators and administrators across IUSM´s statewide Undergraduate Medical Education program, ensuring that they are put in place promptly and effectively.
  • Partners with IUPUI Accessible Educational Services on student accommodations requests.
  • Ensures confidentiality, appropriate communication, and avoid conflict of interest.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for employees and managers regarding disability accommodations, providing guidance, information, and support.
  • Mediates and resolves conflicts or disputes related to disability accommodations in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Manages the budget allocated for disability accommodations, ensuring cost-effective solutions.
  • Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders for purchase of equipment or services needed for individual access (e.g. furniture, technology), and coordinate the equipment checkout process.
  • Maintains accurate records of accommodation requests, approvals, and implementations while ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations.
  • Prepares regular reports and presentations on accommodation activities, outcomes, and recommendations for senior management and relevant committees.
  • On the student’s request, communicates with parties external to IUSM on the student’s behalf, such as the NBME or vocational rehabilitation.
  • Continuously assesses the effectiveness of accommodation programs and make necessary adjustments to improve processes and outcomes.
  • Manages confidential student database.
  • Records interactions with individuals with disabilities and analyzes effectiveness of accommodations; compiles reports and analyzes data related to accommodations, compliance, and program efficacy.
  • Maintains caseload of students for ongoing coordination of academic needs and referrals.
  • Schedules follow-up appointments with accommodated students and students receiving temporary accommodations to check in on accommodation efficacy and student access to the learning environment.
  • Communicates with students via phone, email, Zoom, and in-person as the nature and type of the learning environment shifts to evaluate access needs and accommodations.
  • Assists students in applying for certifying board examination accommodations.
  • Provides ADA training and periodic updates to members of the school community.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to technology, equipment, applicable laws, regulations, standards and/or systems. Monitor best practices in health science education accessibility and universal design to promote best practices across IUSM.
  • Participates in opportunities for professional development, webinar, and professional association activities to maintain an active, working knowledge of state, federal and campus laws and regulations pertaining to non-discrimination and access for people with disabilities.
  • Increases understanding regarding issues affecting individuals with disabilities by delivering presentations, trainings, workshops and/or educational materials related to research and best practices.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives that touch on various/multiple student-related goals, such as enhancing and reinforcing academic engagement and experiential learning; increasing student engagement, wellness, and involvement; fostering learning, inclusion, and development; supporting students in crisis and adversity; and improving the student campus experience.
  • Interfaces directly with students by attending student programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting 1-on-1 to discuss areas of concern on campus, and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student services initiatives and objectives.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student services goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs and initiatives.
  • Projects outcomes for services offered at the program, department/division, or campus level. Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student services against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports on impact to students and budget and presents to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • Serves on committees and performs student services research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices.
  • Plans and coordinates communications for student services initiatives to ensure student participation and engagement.
  • May provide guidance to other student services staff; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.
  • May serve on various campus or cross-functional committees to share student services best practices.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in public affairs, counseling, social work, education, business, or related field

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in higher education student affairs or related field

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.


This position is eligible for remote work or to work a hybrid schedule (mix between 2 days remote and 3 days in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
