Main Purpose of Job:
This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of UK-Japan economic relationship, supporting the British Embassy’s Investment Team to attract and influence Japanese businesses to expand their operations into the UK.
Reporting directly to the Head of Advanced Manufacturing Investment, you’ll be part of a fast-paced team tasked with attracting high-value investment into the UK. You will engage a wide range of stakeholders, utilise strong interpersonal skills to build deep and trusting relationships, and deliver a high-quality, reliable and efficient service to stakeholders.
The role is suited to a commercially minded self-starter who will relish the opportunity to engage with senior stakeholders across a range of areas and grow the UK-Japan commercial partnership.
Based at the British Embassy Tokyo, in this role you’ll work directly with Japanese businesses alongside colleagues in Japan, the UK, and across DBT’s global network to identify and support new investment projects in Advanced Manufacturing.
The projects you work on will be linked to some of the biggest societal and geopolitical changes occurring today, from the once-in-a-century shift from internal combustion engines to electric and connected-and-automated vehicles, to the diversification of critical minerals supply chains.
Outside of your main role, you’ll have the chance to be involved in a range of unique work as part of delivering the British Embassy’s priorities in Japan. Past examples include being involved in the Tokyo Olympics, Rugby World Cup, G7 and G20 summits in Japan, and the visit to Japan by the UK’s Carrier Strike Group in 2025.
What the Jobholder will be Expected to Achieve:
Your core roles and responsibilities will be:
- Account Management – You will support the team to account manage some of the largest companies in Japan, developing strong relationships. You will utilise client account management software to log interactions and share insights with colleagues.
- Pipeline development – You will support the research, analysis and development of a target list of key Japanese companies for engagement across the advanced manufacturing sector. This will include supporting the delivery of key campaigns and helping the team to develop new relationships with prospective investors.
- Event & Programme delivery – You will provide logistical support to aid the delivery of key visits, and Embassy-led events, working with teams across the Embassy to provide a quality and timely service. This will include helping to develop logistical programmes for senior visitors/ministers, and guest-list coordination for bespoke events.
- Senior support – You will provide support to team leaders, including logistical support, brief writing, data analysis.
- Building sector expertise – You will develop a strong understanding of your sector in Japan and the UK and use this knowledge to help deliver the team’s objectives and contribute to the strategic thinking of the wider team.
- Wider UK priorities in Japan. You’ll work with teams across the embassy to deliver UK’s priorities in Japan, and support the embassy’s response in times of crisis.
Skills and experience required for the role:
- People skills. The successful candidate will be somebody that enjoys working with people and building relationships, with strong written and spoken communications skills.
- Flexibility and positive, can-do attitude. Working at the British Embassy can be fast paced and fast changing. The successful candidate will be somebody who enjoys variety and new challenges, and can flexibly work outside their normal role to support the needs of the day.
- Organisational skills and project management. The successful candidate will have strong organisational skills and experience working as part of a team to deliver projects. This role doesn’t involve line management, but will involve taking a leading role in a range of projects.

Working Patterns:
The British Embassy supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This role allows for flexible working e.g. start and end times, working compressed hours, working remotely on one day a week, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.
Occasional out-of-hours working is required to support Embassy events.
This role will be offered pending successful reference and security checks and is subject to the appropriate permissions to work. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy Tokyo is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Japan employment law.
No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in Japan with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit. Any costs related to obtaining or renewing permits and visas are the responsibility of the successful applicant.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
The FCDO operates an agile approach to delivery. To facilitate an agile workforce, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.
Learning and Development Opportunities:
The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals.
All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.
