Position Description:
This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about applying science to find real-world solutions to improving fishing and aquaculture and advancing sustainable seafood production.

The Fisheries Analyst contributes to SFP’s strategy of improving fisheries management by compiling information on and conducting objective evaluations of the stock health, management strategy, and environmental impacts of wild fisheries worldwide using SFP’s FishSource methodologies. The Fisheries Analyst assists in analyzing the data in FishSource, performing quality control on the data, and researching and scoring social issues affecting small-scale fisheries. This position is 100% remote.

FishSource is a unique public online resource with profiles on thousands of fisheries and dozens of aquaculture regions. It offers major seafood buyers timely, impartial, and actionable information on these fisheries and regions. FishSource does not make sustainability judgments; rather, it compiles and summarizes in one place the information needed to evaluate sustainability.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Research

  • Compile information for fisheries analyses through online research
  • Cultivate relationships with fisheries researchers, scientists, and managers at universities, non-profits, and government agencies to gather data

Data analysis

  • Condense highly technical information from multiple global sources into concise and easy-to-understand language
  • Use the FishSource methodologies to provide impartial summaries and scores of the stock health, management strategies, and environmental impacts of fisheries
  • Score social issues specifically affecting small-scale fisheries for publication in FishSource You will be trained on the methodologies

Additional duties:

  • Implement quality assurance processes and quality control checks
  • Provide technical support within SFP and to external stakeholders

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science in fisheries, marine science, ocean science, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years experience in fisheries, marine science, ocean science, or related field
  • Solid knowledge of fisheries stock assessments, management plans, and environmental impacts of fisheries
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with staff from various cultures and countries
  • Highly proficient in reading, writing, and speaking in English
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work productively and independently in a fast-paced, remote environment with multiple online tools and platforms
  • Scheduling flexibility suitable for working in a virtual organization with colleagues across multiple time zones
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

Additional desirable qualifications and skills:

Additional consideration will be given to candidates with experience and skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Proficiency in Spanish and/or an Asian language, particularly Japanese
  • Familiarity with a diversity of global fisheries
  • Professional or academic experience working on or with salmon fisheries
  • Professional or academic experience working on or with small-scale fisheries
  • Multispecies assessment experience
  • Technical experience working with databases

Duration/Level of Effort:

  • This is a full-time, remote staff position (40 hours per week) and starts immediately.

Compensation:

  • Commensurate with experience and determined within the guidelines of the national and regional labor laws governing your location.
