Junior Professional Associates – Program Description

The Junior Professionals Associate Program (JPA) offers an exceptional opportunity for recent graduates to embark on a professional journey, providing a three-year contract with valuable work experience within a diverse and dynamic environment and the potential of field work experience. The program is an excellent platform to sharpen your existing skills and to develop new ones, all while gaining a profound understanding of the challenges associated with reducing poverty and fostering shared prosperity on a livable planet.

The following are minimum requirements to be eligible for the JPA program:
• Be 32 years of age or younger

• Hold a bachelor’s degree

• Be fluent in English
The JPA program at the World Bank is a highly competitive initiative. Specific Unit Description – Gender Group (HGNDR)
Gender equality is an urgent imperative. The world is experiencing an unprecedented set of crises wit disproportionately negative impacts on women, girls, sexual and gender minorities, and marginalized groups. Climate change, fragility, forced displacement, and pandemics threaten hard-won gains in women’s human capital. At stake is the fundamental human right of gender equality of all people, a matter of fairness and justice. It is a foundation for a peaceful and prosperous world and essential for development. Achieving gender equality is, however, uniquely challenging, and complex.
The new 2024-2030 World Bank Group Gender Strategy puts forward the bold ambition to accelerate gender equality for a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive future in alignment with the World Bank Evolution Roadmap. The Strategy responds to the global urgency, fundamentality, and complexity of achieving gender equality. Building on implementation of the 2016-2023 WBG Gender Strategy, the new Strategy proposes to engage with greater ambition – approaching gender equality for all as essential for global development – and to engage differently. https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/gender.
The integration of gender perspectives within the World Bank Group’s Core Diagnostics is crucial for implementing the 2024-2030 WBG Gender Strategy. These analytics are essential for shaping country-level programs and policies and are a prerequisite for lending programs. By incorporating a gender perspective into these core products, the WBG will provide evidence to policymakers on the benefits of addressing gender-based constraints.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Junior Professional Associate for the Gender Group will support the work on integrating gender into Core Diagnostics, which may include Climate Country and Development Reports (CCDRs), Growth and Jobs Report, Public Financial Reviews (PFRs), Risk and Resilience Assessments (RRAs) and Poverty and/or Equity Assessments (PEA). The JPA will work closely with the gender group and relevant country teams to generate more evidence on the magnitude and impact of gender-based constraints, develop tools and processes to integrate the gender perspective into key core diagnostics, and share best practices on gender-informed diagnostics. Key activities will include, among others:
• Undertake as needed literature reviews on the impact of gender-based constraints on the economy, social, poverty and climate outcomes.

• Create Excel and Stata tools and manuals to analyze the magnitude and impact of gender gaps in the economy.

• Translate macro, climate and fiscal analyses with a gender perspective into standardized processes and toolkits for country teams to replicate.

• Process household surveys, labor force surveys, enterprise surveys and other datasets necessary for complementary analytical inputs.

• Work closely with country teams preparing Core Diagnostics to identify entry points to incorporate gender perspective into their analyses.

• Synthesize findings from upcoming Core Diagnostics to share and distill best practice, trends, knowledge and lessons learned across units.

 

Selection Criteria

 

• MA in Economics, International Development, Public Policy or related fields

• Good understanding of methodological approaches and tools used for macroeconomic modeling, distributional analysis, and fiscal incidence.

• Relevant experience in at least two of the following areas: (a) gender; (c) macro-fiscal modeling; (c) climate; (d) poverty and inequality.

• Strong quantitative and analytical skills in the following areas: (a) analysis of microdata; (b) programming in statistical packages (e.g., STATA or other software); (c) proficiency in creating Excel workbooks for data analysis and country-specific data visualization.

• Demonstrated experience working across boundaries, sharing perspectives, and considering diverse viewpoints.

• Excellent writing and communication skills in English.
