WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Juniper Hills steward, as part of our OR stewardship Team, is a full-time, one-year term position who primarily works near central Oregon on properties owned or managed by The Nature Conservancy. The Juniper Hills steward will plan and manage a variety of stewardship projects at several locations including the Juniper Hills Preserve, Lawrence Memorial Grasslands Preserve, and others across the state. The work entails on-the-ground activities, such as invasive species control, and plant monitoring, as well as coordinating the work of contractors and volunteers. The Juniper Hills steward will work with a variety of different people including volunteers, conservation partners, contractors, neighbors, and members of the public. Stewardship responsibilities will require monitoring the property for human and livestock trespass and dealing with those situations safely and effectively. The position also entails the operation and maintenance of tools and equipment (e.g., tractor, UTV, chainsaws, etc), as well as the maintenance of facilities. There may also be opportunities to assist in fire management activities in Oregon. The Juniper Hills steward will utilize organization skills to track spending to budgets, record spatial data, and establish contracts and other project elements. While the Juniper Hills Preserve is the primary focus, this position requires up to 25% travel to other parts of the state to assist with stewardship and other projects. They will work in variable weather conditions, at remote and isolated locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

We are looking for a self-motivated and dedicated individual to join our Stewardship Team and help care for important conservation lands near central Oregon. This is an opportunity for someone with strong organization, collaboration, prioritization, and communication skills and a person who enjoys seeing their efforts result in healthy ecosystems and natural communities. Optional housing on-site near Post, Oregon may be available. If not living on-site, a home office arrangement will be established and must be located within a 60-minute drive of Juniper Hills Preserve.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • BA/BS degree and 1-year related experience in conservation field work or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in identifying plant/animal species.
  • Experience in data collection, summary techniques, and reporting.
  • Experience operating and repairing various types of equipment, hand tools, and machinery.
  • Ability to meet all TNC Youth Qualification requirements and background checks.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Experience working in a diverse team environment with high collaboration to deliver work.                             

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications such as red card, first aid, CPR, and herbicide license.
  • Ability to meet all TNC Youth Qualification requirements and background checks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Web browsers).
  • Knowledge of GIS software or collecting field GPS data.
  • Experience conducting physical labor and/or working in remote locations on difficult/hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • FFT2 qualified or ability to pass fire training courses and provide a copy of the certificate indicating completion of S-130, S-190, I-100, and IS-700 within 6 months of hire (online courses available).  See http://www.tncfiremanual.org/firefighter.htm

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $24.51- $26.71/ hour for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate’s location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
