SUMMARY OF PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The AFSC team in Jordan focuses on the conditions of underreported refugee communities in Jordan and the issues that impact their lives. The team in Jordan seeks to develop an understanding of their experiences and conditions to support change and promote refugee rights.

The candidate will assist AFSC’s efforts to provide essential services and support to minority refugees and migrants in Jordan. This opportunity offers hands-on experience in a dynamic and multicultural environment, allowing the candidate to contribute to projects that directly impact the lives of vulnerable individuals and communities.

The candidate will work closely with the Program Manager to coordinate and facilitate the activities of the migration program. This involves ensuring a holistic approach to program implementation among Civil Society Organizations partners to achieve the desired program outcomes.

The candidate will work with AFSC and the partner organization JRS Jordan as part of their Communications and Advocacy Team. AFSC is partnering with JRS Jordan for advocacy work related to refugee minorities’ rights and is supporting the JRS Jordan initiative called Refugee Committee.

The Refugee Committee is a group of representatives of refugee communities of different nationalities. This group joins meetings that aim to raise awareness about the situation of refugees in Jordan and advocate for refugee rights regardless of nationality. The committee members are invited to attend meetings and represent refugee communities on different occasions, such as with donors, partners, journalists, and researchers. The candidate will support the JRS Communications and Advocacy team in facilitating and activating Refugee Committee work and implementing AFSC and JRS Jordan’s advocacy strategy.

Together with the Middle East Regional team, the candidate will support AFSC’s community migration program activities and relationships with other stakeholders. The candidate will report to the Program Manager and collaborate with the Middle East region team and several AFSC experts at the Central office in Philadelphia.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

With AFSC Jordan:

Strategic planning

  • Develop research functional to project development and implementation with strategic insight.
  • Assist in fundraising, grant proposal writing, and concept note development to secure resources for refugee and migrant support projects.

Project coordination and implementation

  • Carry out the activities related to migration programs.
  • Assist in organizing awareness campaigns and outreach initiatives to promote integration and social cohesion.
  • Other duties as required.

Networking and Representation

  • Engage with refugee and migrant communities to understand their needs, concerns, and challenges.
  • Collaborate with local and international organizations, governmental agencies, and stakeholders to ensure coordinated efforts in supporting refugees and migrants.
  • Participate in meetings and convenings.

With JRS Jordan:

  • Facilitate the monthly meetings of the Refugee Committee and ensure the creation of a safe space for discussion and mutual assistance.
  • Prepare reports for any meetings attended by the Refugee Committee.
  • Support the JRS Communications and Advocacy team in developing the 2024 Advocacy strategy and action plan, following a participatory approach involving Committee members.
  • Assist the JRS Communications and Advocacy team in identifying training needs for Committee members and propose capacity-building opportunities.
  • Collect data, document situations of concern, and assist in producing written position papers, statements, articles, presentations, and recommendations to be shared with relevant stakeholders following the JRS Advocacy strategy.
  • Assist in handling requests from journalists or researchers (e.g., organizing focus group discussions and collecting information).
  • Participate in meetings and convenings with the Refugee Committee and the JRS Communications and Advocacy team.
  • Collaborate in the creation of surveys and research projects, as well as in the organization of events.
  • Support the implementation of the advocacy strategy for JRS Jordan.
  • Regularly and actively participate in meetings of the JRS Regional Advocacy Task Force and JRS Global Advocacy team, as needed.
  • Attending training sessions proposed to enhance skills related to communications and advocacy.

TARGETED SPECIALISED KNOWLEDGE

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., social sciences, international relations, environmental studies)
  2. Previous relevant experience in advocacy, communications, research or any related fields (even if volunteering experience)
  3. Passion for humanitarian work and a solid commitment to supporting minority refugees and migrants.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. Cultural sensitivity and empathy towards diverse populations.
  6. Acceptance of diversity and inclusion as core values.
  7. Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to a multicultural environment.
  8. Proficiency in Arabic and English (both written and spoken) is preferred.
  9. Previous experience or knowledge of refugee and migrant issues is a plus.
  10. Demonstrated commitment to AFSC’s mission and values.
  11. Commitment to JRS’s mission, vision, and values, in accompanying and serving refugees and to advocate for their rights.
  12. Having an innovative and creative mindset.
  13. High sense of discretion in always dealing with confidential matters.
  14. High integrity and honesty; ability to deal tactfully and discreetly with people, situations, and information.

REPORTING AND COMMUNICATION

The candidate will regularly communicate with the AFSC team and report to the Program Manager. Furthermore, the candidate will support the Program Manager to provide updates and reports for review and feedback as necessary. The candidate will also report to JRS Communications and Advocacy Manager.
