Project A.N.T. Volunteers serve in pairs (or more) at a designated “host” state park (opportunity to work in other parks as well throughout the term) and focus on habitat restoration by managing invasive plants in some of the most pristine real Florida environments. Volunteers reduce invasive plant infestations through various land management techniques including but not limited to herbicide use/manual removal, recruiting volunteers & educating park visitors, and conducting outreach at schools and events, etc.
A.N.T. Volunteers use the following methods to manage invasive plants in their host park:

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve is the largest contiguous grassland east of the Mississippi River (~58,000 acres) and is home to over 30 listed species, including the Florida grasshopper sparrow. The state park is Florida’s first international dark sky place and provides recreational activities including camping, hiking, biking, fishing, astronomy, and wildlife-viewing. For more information about the Preserve, visit https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/kissimmee-prairie-preserve-state-park
FLCC Volunteers are our most prized assets of the Kissimmee Prairie team. Invasive plant infestations are a threat to our endangered, endemic ecosystem and all the species that are found within. Volunteers traverse the preserve on UTV, swamp buggy or 4WD vehicles to survey and treat exotic plant infestations. Further, Volunteers assist in volunteer recruitment and community outreach. Our Volunteers will become trained in plant identification, herbicide application, ATV and swamp buggy operation, and wildland firefighting. Volunteers also may assist with Florida grasshopper sparrow work.
The preserve is very remote with the closest grocery store being 45 minutes away. Shared housing is provided.
