Description of Work Area: Jamestown Wildlife Area
Jamestown Wildlife Area, 5,124 acres – This area lies approx. 13 miles northwest of Concordia, Kansas along tributaries of the Republican River. It has approximately 2,500 acres of intensively managed wetlands. The remaining acres include contracted cropland interspersed among upland and some riparian habitat. Management emphasis is on moist-soil wetland management and development, and intensive upland management. Primary management needs of these uplands include the reduction of invasive trees, improved grassland management through controlled burning, native warm season grass plantings and reintroduction of livestock grazing on some tracts. Tied in with Jamestown Wildlife Area is Talmo Wildlife Area that is owned by KDWP. This area is 988 acres approximately 20 miles east of Jamestown Wildlife Area which includes 150 acres of managed moist soil marshes, 90 acres of natural saline areas, 150 acres of agricultural production and the remaining acres consist of native warm and cool season grasses. Lovewell Wildlife Area is approximately 2,215 acres of wildlife habitat surrounding the 3,000 acre irrigation reservoir. The area has 550 acres of agricultural production, both native warm and cool season grasses with invasive tree issues along with a fair amount of cottonwood/ash bottom land acres and burr oak savannah type uplands. Brzon (320 acres), Griswold (320 acres) and Pack (74 acres) Wildlife Areas are three more satellite properties spread out across Republic and part of Washington Counties. These areas consist of some agricultural production, grazing for wildlife benefit with a mixture of warm season grasses, riparian woodlands, and scattered blocks of timber. All of these properties offer a vast variety of habitat types and management challenges, along with many outdoor opportunities for hunters and anglers in north central Kansas.
