Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Embassy in Kuwait has a vacancy for a Driver under the Defence Section, job grade S1 on a permanent contract.

Main purpose of the job:

To support daily operations by ensuring the safe, secure, and efficient transportation of the Defence Attaché, VIPs, and other Defence delegations, while also performing administrative tasks as directed by the Defence Section.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Transportation

  • Provide safe, secure, and punctual transportation for the Defence Attaché, VIPs, and visiting Defence delegations to official appointments, business engagements, and social events outside the Embassy.
  • Plan and prepare for journeys to unfamiliar destinations by confirming timings, routes, and locations in advance.
  • Liaise with the Defence Section to coordinate diary and scheduling requirements, identify potential logistical issues, and advise on optimal routes when multiple engagements occur in quick succession.

Vehicle Management

Maintain the Defence Section vehicle to the highest standards for official diplomatic use, including:

  • Performing daily checks (engine oil, fuel, tyre pressure, water) and ensuring cleanliness.
  • Updating driving logs daily and preparing end-of-month documentation for audit purposes.
  • Managing registration and compliance by taking the vehicle to the Traffic Department for inspections and submitting renewal paperwork (e.g., car registration and driving licence).
  • Reporting maintenance needs promptly and arranging servicing at regular mileage intervals or when defects are identified.

Protocol and Administrative Support

  • Deliver and collect letters, invitations, and official documents for the Defence Section as required.
  • Hand-deliver signed documents to key ministries and authorities, including the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Coast Guard, Armed Forces, and Port Authorities.
  • Assist with Embassy events, including planning, set-up, and on-site support.
  • Flexibility and Crisis Response
  • Undertake additional tasks as directed, including participation in Embassy events, emergency planning, and supporting crisis response measures.

The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any response to a crisis.

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as you:

  • Are legally resident in Kuwait (Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country); and
  • Complete and successfully pass all local and UK security checks, including professional background checks.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Must have a valid Kuwait driving licence.
  • Previous driving experience, with a high standard of driving skills (will be tested at interview).
  • Knowledge of Kuwaiti traffic rules and road safety, and knowledge of various Kuwaiti locations.
  • Good English language skills – both spoken and written (will be tested at interview). Able to express ideas and messages clearly.
  • Basic vehicle maintenance knowledge.
  • Basic IT skills: use of Microsoft Word and email (Microsoft Outlook) to keep in touch with wider embassy activities.
  • Resilience and a flexible approach.
  • Must have a valid Kuwaiti residence.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Previous experience of driving for Senior officials/ VIPs in high-security environments.
  • Basic fluency in Arabic – speaking, listening and reading.

Working conditions and remuneration:

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of KWD 585.141 per month. The package includes a good level of medical insurance, a return flight fare to your home country for non-Kuwaitis every year, relevant social security payments for Kuwaiti nationals, and an engaging working environment. Leave entitlement is 30 days per year (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays.

There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

This position is for a full-time employment, on a permanent contract, subject to a 90 working day probationary period.

Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week (this is made up of 37.5 hours net per week and a daily 30-minute lunch break). The normal working hours are 07:30 – 15:30 from Sunday to Thursday. Due to the nature of the work, the jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out-of-hours.

The Embassy has an active Learning and Development Committee, and the whole of Post is committed to providing the time and resources for staff to develop personally and professionally. The 70/20/10 learning and development model is applied in a flexible manner, with extensive informal and formal opportunities readily available.

The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two-three months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates profile and UK footprint. Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of twelve (12) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
