The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Research Assistant or Laboratory Research Specialist with a strong chemistry or biochemistry background in the laboratory of Dean Mark Gladwin.

Job Summary:

The University of Maryland School of Medicine – Department of Medicine, Dean’s Office is currently recruiting for either a Laboratory Research Assistant or Specialist. The Laboratory Assistant or Specialist will work on the projects in the field of nitric oxide-hemoglobin interactions, carbon monoxide poisoning, hemoproteins, and bioinorganic chemistry. The Assistant or Specialist will be tasked with generating data over a wide range of biochemical experiments.

Laboratory Research Assistant:

Primary Duties:

  • Primary responsibilities include spectroscopic assays (e.g., UV-Vis, nitric oxide analyzer, etc.), protein manipulation, and rudimentary chemical synthesis.
  • Perform dimensional analysis for stoichiometric calculations, etc.
  • Perform protein assays, Western blotting, immunostaining, tissue culture, transfection, RNA/DNA/protein isolation, plasmid construction, transformation, microscopy, and image processing.
  • Assist in animal handling, injections, organ dissection, and tissue processing.
  • Performs general laboratory duties, such as autoclaving, preparing chemical solutions, media, reagents, and buffers.
  • Excellent record keeping and communication skills are required.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel).
  • Compile and analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Laboratory Research Specialist

Primary Duties:

  • Independently perform and troubleshoot experiments and participate in the design of research studies.
  • Primary responsibilities include spectroscopic assays (e.g., UV-Vis, nitric oxide analyzer, etc.), protein manipulation, and rudimentary chemical synthesis.
  • Perform dimensional analysis for stoichiometric calculations, etc.
  • Perform protein assays, Western blotting, immunostaining, tissue culture, transfection, RNA/DNA/protein isolation, plasmid construction, transformation, microscopy, and image processing.
  • Assist in animal handling, injections, organ dissection, and tissue processing.

Qualifications

  

Laboratory Research Assistant:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, or related field.

Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.

Laboratory Research Specialist:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, or related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization.

Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.

Hiring Ranges: Commensurate with education and experience 

Laboratory Research Assistant: $45,000 – $50,000

Laboratory Research Specialist: $60,000 – $64,000
