HCLT Land Stewardship Intern
Time frame: Flexible, Full-Time, Part-Time, Semester Internship
Hours: Flexible, up to 32hrs (4 days)/week on average; typically 9AM-5PM on weekdays
Location: Highlands, NC; On-Site
Job Description:
The Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust (HCLT) is a nonprofit land conservation organization operating in southern Macon and Jackson Counties. HCLT is looking for a capable person that can help with trail maintenance/building, invasive species control, general property management, easement monitoring, and equipment upkeep. Applicants must be physically capable to work in rugged terrain in field conditions outside, all day. The intern will be expected to work 3-5 days a week, usually on weekdays.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in property management, boundary inspections and marking, and monitoring activities, including in remote areas
- Mowing HCLT owned properties where appropriate
- Map/treat/remove invasive species under supervision (may include pesticide applications)
- Maintain and build trails using tools such as loppers, shovels, etc.
- Communicate with volunteers and assist/lead with volunteer work days
- Use a handheld GPS unit
- Complete and organize property reports
- Upkeep and organize HCLT equipment and storage
- Help maintain trail and property management equipment
- Assist in setting up HCLT led events
Qualifications:
- Ability and willingness to work outside and maneuver in rugged terrain on and off trails
- Ability to perform moderately strenuous manual labor
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Additional weight will be given to applicants with experience, classes, or training in: natural resource management; parks and recreation; forestry; biology; ecology; environmental science; trail building; pesticide application; invasive plant control; chain saw use; Southern Appalachian flora identification; and GIS.
