- Leading the project’s development of a Land Use Plan.
- Attaining a deep understanding of the human, ecological, wildlife and landscape threats, with plans developed that balance ecological and social objectives such that these systems can be sustainably managed into the future;
- Leading the integration of the GNML Land Use Plan (LUP) process into national, state, county, local and other stakeholder management planning processes undertaken by government or entities, including individual development planning processes such as linear infrastructure, industrial projects and land tenure;
- Securing a seat at the table for the project through stakeholder engagement such that African Parks is seen as a credible partner in the Land-use Planning processes underway in the GNML.
- Leading the growth, strategic land-use research and planning in the landscape with partners which include 4 States, many sub-state political areas, several ethnic groups lands with complex, long-standing and extensive indigenous presence throughout the migration landscape;
- Understanding and influencing the legislative process and existing legislation to design and validate a land-use planning process anchored in the Wildlife Conservation and Land Acts;
- Assuring the alignment of any LUP with African Parks’ Long-Term Sustainability Strategy (LTSS) and other strategic and operational documents;
- Discerning where the project can conduct LUP-related efforts in-house and where external expertise is required to either train project staff or conduct LUP-related efforts independently;
- Orienting the LUP process towards efficient and effective implementation outcomes such that these plans can be proficiently executed across the GNML;
- Coordinating the South Sudan LUP with the AP Gambella Project, which forms part of the migration landscape;
- Defining data collection objectives, protocols, plans and coordinating data collection on the natural environment, wildlife, and human landscape with other operational staff;
- Determining and implementing the appropriate type, level and timing of land-use planning that is achievable and the legal and operational means to accomplish the task;
- Designing a consultation process based on free, prior and informed consent to secure social license and buy-in for the land use plan at all the appropriate levels;
- Carrying out stakeholder mapping with the assistance of external consultants where needed;
- Undertaking comprehensive data collection including socio-economic surveys through participative mapping, specific aerial and ground human, habitat and wildlife variables, and analysis with other operational staff;
- Writing a draft land-use management plan, with the competent authorities that includes the management mechanisms for various land-use designations and structures to implement the land-use management plan using a phased-approach;
- Obtaining official validation of the plan;
- Working in partnership with Park Managers and other operational project entities to assure consensus, integration of the LUP process into the community and Tango teams responsibilities and to assure the needed support for the LUP process;
