Language Technology Specialist (60%), based in Geneva, Switzerland

Purpose

Under the supervision of the head of LINPUB, the language technology specialist helps to develop and manage computer-assisted translation and terminology tools (CATT tools) and AI tools, and works on terminology.

The Language and Publications Unit (LINPUB) contributes to the ICRC’s humanitarian work by enhancing communication through clear and consistent language and the production of quality publications appropriate for a wide range of target groups. 

LINPUB provides language services at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva. The core team of in-house translators – working into Arabic, English and French – works with a network of freelancers and staff in Regional Communication Centres to deliver a large volume of high-quality work. The in-house team, with its many years of experience and its linguistic expertise in all areas of the ICRC’s work, ensures consistency and continuity in the organization’s written communications. 

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

• Works with the Technology and Information Division on technical improvements and upgrades of all the CATT tools used at the ICRC as well as of the ICRC platform for managing language service requests (Lingo); to this end, contributes to testing prior to applying upgrades
• Provides language technology support to language specialists at the ICRC (headquarters, Regional Communication Centres and delegations), sharing information and good practices, and running training programmes
• Keeps abreast of language technology developments (CATT tools, machine translation and other artificial intelligence tools); to this end, interacts with counterparts in international organizations, sharing and exchanging information on trends in the field of language technology, and making use of or applying new information, methods, tools, etc., when appropriate
• Monitors the quality of the current systems of machine translation in use at the ICRC and how they are integrated into the translation workflow
• Collects and processes, in consultation with the in-house translators, terminological data from the various areas of the ICRC’s activities and inserts them in the ICRC’s terminology database (MultiTerm), in line with ICRC guidelines
• Provides support to the language coordinators when necessary, assisting them in the management of the language requests; to this end, acts as a backup language coordinator
• Performs other related tasks as required

Relationships

• Internally, interacts with language specialists at headquarters, Regional Communication Centres, delegations, colleagues in the Technology and Information Division, requesters and experts in specific domains

• Externally, interacts with freelance translators and with counterparts from international organizations

Education required

• Master’s degree in translation, terminology and/or language technology
• Excellent spoken and written English and French
• Additional languages (especially Arabic or Spanish) an asset
• Advanced computer proficiency
• Excellent knowledge of terminology and CATT tools (particularly the SDL Trados products Studio and MultiTerm)
• Good knowledge of machine translation tools
• Good knowledge of terminology management
• Knowledge of international law or related fields an asset

Professional experience required

• 4+ years of professional experience in language technology, terminology or translation
• Experience in training an asset

Sous la supervision de la cheffe de LINPUB, le/la spécialiste en technologies linguistiques contribue à la mise au point et à la gestion des outils de traduction et de terminologie assistées par ordinateur (TAO) ainsi que des outils basés sur l’intelligence artificielle, et participe aux travaux de terminologie.

L’Unité services linguistiques et publications (LINPUB) contribue à l’action humanitaire du CICR en facilitant une communication claire et cohérente et en produisant des publications de qualité, adaptées à un large éventail de publics cibles.

LINPUB fournit des services linguistiques au siège du CICR à Genève. Son équipe de traducteurs internes – travaillant vers l’anglais, l’arabe et le français – collabore avec un réseau de traducteurs indépendants ainsi qu’avec les centres régionaux de communication pour traiter un volume important de documents. Forte de nombreuses années d’expérience et de compétences linguistiques dans tous les domaines d’activité du CICR, l’équipe interne assure la qualité et la continuité des communications écrites de l’institution.

Responsabilités

• En collaboration avec la Division des technologies de l’information, œuvre à l’amélioration technique et à la mise à jour de tous les outils de TAO utilisés au CICR, ainsi que de sa plateforme de gestion des demandes de services linguistiques (Lingo) ; contribue à cette fin aux tests préalables au déploiement des mises à jour.
• Fournit un soutien à l’utilisation des technologies linguistiques aux spécialistes linguistiques du CICR (au siège, dans les centres régionaux de communication et dans les délégations), en partageant des informations et des bonnes pratiques et en organisant des formations.
• Se tient au courant de l’évolution des technologies linguistiques (outils de TAO, traduction automatique et autres outils basés sur l’intelligence artificielle) ; interagit à cette fin avec ses homologues dans les autres organisations internationales pour échanger des informations sur les tendances en matière de technologies linguistiques, en vue de tirer le meilleur parti des nouveaux outils, méthodes, informations, etc.
• Contrôle la qualité des systèmes de traduction automatique actuellement utilisés au CICR et évalue leur intégration dans les flux de travail de traduction.
• En consultation avec les traducteurs internes, collecte et traite les données terminologiques relatives aux différents domaines d’activité du CICR et les insère dans la base de données terminologique (MultiTerm), conformément aux lignes directrices du CICR.
• Apporte son soutien aux coordinatrices linguistiques en cas de besoin, en les aidant à gérer les demandes de services linguistiques et en les remplaçant pendant leur absence.
• Effectue d’autres tâches connexes en fonction des besoins.

Relations de travail

• À l’interne, interagit avec les spécialistes linguistiques (au siège, dans les centres régionaux de communication et dans les délégations), les équipes de la Division des technologies de l’information, les demandeurs de services linguistiques et les experts de domaines d’activité spécifiques.
• À l’externe, interagit avec les traducteurs indépendants et ses homologues dans les autres organisations internationales.

Formation requise

• Maîtrise en traduction, terminologie et/ou technologies linguistiques.
• Excellent niveau d’anglais et de français, à l’oral et à l’écrit.
• La connaissance d’autres langues (notamment l’arabe et l’espagnol) constituerait un avantage.
• Compétences avancées en informatique.
• Excellente connaissance des outils de terminologie et de TAO, notamment de la suite SDL Trados (Studio et MultiTerm).
• Bonne connaissance des outils de traduction automatique.
• Bonnes connaissances en gestion de la terminologie.
• Des connaissances en droit international ou dans des domaines connexes constitueraient un avantage.

Expérience professionelle requise

• Plus de 4 ans d’expérience professionnelle dans le domaine des technologies linguistiques, de la terminologie ou de la traduction.
• Une expérience de la formation constituerait un avantage.
