JOB VACANCY
Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights is a charitable organization supporting survivors of human rights violations, defending fundamental freedoms, and promoting democratic values throughout the world. Our programs provide mental health, medical treatment, and other support services to survivors of trauma, terror, domestic violence, and human rights violations.
We are seeking applications for the following position:
Position: Lawyer
Status: part-time employee (18 Hours/Week)
Based: Alqosh, Iraq
Required Degree: Bachelor in Law
Reports to: Center Manager (CM) Alqosh
Application deadline: January 11, 2024
Duration of contract: 12 Months
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Legal support
-
Works with clients and represents them in front of courts and other state institutions, if necessary;

Legal education and information sharing in camps, women’s shelter, places where people deprived of their liberty are held, and orphanages;
-
Legal counselling, including cases of domestic violence;
-
Supports with missing documents of clients;
-
Provides legal advice in relevant internal decision-making processes;
-
Provides training and support to staff of the organization, interns, paralegals and external partners;
-
Organizes training, information and legal empowerment events.
Liaison with public authorities
-
Monitors prisons and police stations to ensure human rights standards are being kept;
-
Provides counsel and general legal information to persons deprived of their liberty, and drafts reports following visits to closed institutions;
-
Provides training to police officers, prison staff, holders of judicial functions and other public officials in Iraq on human rights standards;
-
Administrative tasks (e.g., dealing with the authorities for registration and access).
Advocacy, awareness, training and networking
-
Public advocacy /outreach (radio, TV, newspapers);
-
Networking (attend different meetings, establishing contacts) and collaborating with other stakeholders and networks working on similar purposes;

Represent the Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights, if necessary, vis-à-vis the public authorities, in all legal affairs;

Works with community facilitators/paralegals to enhance legal education.
Project and administrative tasks
-
Regular and complete documentation of client data in the client files and the database;

Monthly documentation of all activities in a report;
-
Makes purchases related to the organisation’s work and brings invoices.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills
REQUIREMENTS
-
Fluent in Kurdish and English, Arabic is an advantage;
-
Law degree and a license to practice law before Iraqi institutions Master degree in human rights is desirable;

Basic knowledge of international human rights law and institutions;

Good computer skills in areas of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Experience in working with national and international organizations;
-
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills;
-
Ability to work independently and deliver reports within a tight timeframe;
-
Active interest in promoting human rights and social justice; awareness of national and international current events.
