About the role

Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) is seeking dedicated lawyers to join our Shepparton team and provide high-quality legal services across the Goulburn region. We have two positions available:

  • Lawyer – Child Protection and Family Law: In this role, you will advocate in child protection and family law cases, including court appearances, duty lawyer services, legal advice, casework, and community education. This is a fixed-term role until 30 September 2025.
  • Lawyer – Help Before Court: In this role, you will deliver high-quality legal services in criminal law and family violence matters. You’ll advocate in various courts, manage casework, offer legal advice and early resolution services, and work with other legal professionals and community groups. This is an ongoing position.

This role is based at our Shepparton office on Yorta Yorta Country.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy and managing casework in criminal law, family law, and family violence matters.
  • Understanding of the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005, the Family Law Act 1975, and related legislation.
  • Strong abilities to engage with clients, including children and vulnerable individuals, and work well with others.
  • Flexibility in handling diverse legal matters and working in various settings, including court and outreach locations.
  • A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
