Lead Associate, Media Advocacy (P2)

The Lead Associate will undertake key media and communications functions integral to furthering Save the Children’s – and its political advocacy arm, Save the Children Action Network’s – policy and advocacy priorities. Save the Children’s advocacy portfolio covers a wide range of thematic areas all relating to children, domestically and internationally. The Lead Associate will assist the Senior Communications Advisor and follow their direction in ensuring that key audiences and stakeholders – media, coalition partners, policymakers, advocates and the general public – are appropriately identified and effectively communicated in line with strategic priorities and goals. The position will have regular contact with journalists outlets across all mediums at the local, state and national level, draft and edit a variety of media and communications content, and play a critical role in monitoring and evaluating media advocacy outputs and impact.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

  • Build relationships with national, state and local press in priority states (25%)
  • Assist day-to-day policy and advocacy media operations, including but not limited to developing media pitches, booking interviews for staff and surrogates, preparing spokespeople for media interviews, press release distribution and follow-up, media monitoring and press list management. (25%)
  • Support the development of media and communications strategies to further the Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns team’s advocacy goals. (15%)
  • Interact with relevant teams to ensure the advocacy communications team is adequately briefed and capable of carrying out its work in support of the organization’s advocacy goals. (15%)
  • Draft and edit advocacy-related materials, including talking points, messaging and letters to the editor (15%)
  • Monitor, catalogue and report on media advocacy outputs and impact. (5%)

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent, plus at least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Proven writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to organize and execute tasks for several campaigns simultaneously.
  • Ability and eagerness to engage across the political spectrum and to champion the organization’s bipartisan approach to effective policymaking.
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining and environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience pitching and interacting with media outlets and personnel, especially in Washington, DC, and across the United States.
  • Experience in advocacy and/or grassroots campaigns.
  • Experience preparing spokespeople for media interviews.

Compensation

Save the Children is offering the following salary ranges for this position, dependent on candidate location:

  • Geo 1 – NY Metro, DC, and other locations with labor costs significantly above national average: Target Salary for this position is $66,300 – $74,100 base salary
  • Geo 2 – Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $60,350 – $67,450 base salary
  • Geo 3 – Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $54,400 – $60,800 base salary

The salary ranges listed above are for US based candidates. For candidates located outside of the US, salary ranges will be based on the salary scales of the local employer of record.

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location (more information on job structure is available here). Employee may be eligible for an incentive program.
