United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a partnership between UNEP and the Global Financial sector to mobilise private sector finance for sustainable development.

UNEP FI works with more than 460 banks, insurers, investors, and over 160 supporting institutions to help create a financial sector that serves people and the planet while delivering positive impacts. UNEP FI aims to inspire, inform, and enable financial institutions to improve people’s quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

The initiative supports the implementation of programmes at a regional level across Africa, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America. UNEP FI convenes financial institutions to advance knowledge and practice in areas including, climate, nature, pollution & circular economy, the SDGs & impact, and social issues. Also, this initiative convenes three finance sector ‘net-zero” alliances, and is working with key stakeholders to help members align portfolios with science-based greenhouse gas emissions
pathways through interim targets:

  1. Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (‘AOA’): Launched in 2019, with more than 70 institutional asset owners.
  2. Net Zero Banking Alliance (‘NZBA’): Launched in 2021 with over 115 banks, the majority of NZBA members are PRB signatories that are setting ambitious climate targets.
  3. Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (‘NZIA’) Launched in 2021, convening 30 leading insurers representing about 12% of world premiums, working together to establish the transition to net-zero insurance.

 

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the learning and education lead will be responsible for the below functions:

  1. The Learning and Education Lead will ensure the quality of education offerings across partners through the implementation of a robust quality framework.
  2. They will engage with FIs to maximize the uptake of UNEP FI’s education and training offerings and work consultatively with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure the global applicability of the education framework.

  4. Ongoing continuous development and implementation of UNEP FI learning & education, training and professional development strategy, focusing on the banking and insurance industries.
  5. Develop and implement an accreditation policy for UNEP FI’s training and education partners. Coordinate monitoring and reporting on UNEP FI’s education and training, using consistent methodological approaches to allow identification of best practice. Develop and manage a broad global network of education partners to support the development of UNEP FI’s education strategy.
  6. Establish and maintain a quality framework for UNEP FI, which will allow comparability and consistency in capacity building work across UNEP FI, and in partner bodies. Support implementation of UNEP FI’s due diligence /risk policy in the context of education and training partnerships. Develop education and training offering across all types of FIs to support the PRB, PSI and other initiatives. Engage with colleagues across all areas of UNEP FI to ensure full involvement and consultation on education and training strategy.
  7. Develop, implement and evaluate assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
  8. Perform consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
  9. Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources.
  10. Coordinate policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies,
  11. Generate survey initiatives; design data collection tools; review, analyze and interpret responses, identify problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
  12. Organize and prepare written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  13. Provide substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
  14. Initiate and coordinate outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities. Leads and/or participates in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.
The incumbent in the position of Learning and Education Lead will report to the Head of Unit, United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI). In this role, the individual will have the responsibility of directing and implementing UNEP FI’s education, training, and professional development strategy. This includes developing a comprehensive framework to ensure the quality and consistency of capacity building initiatives across UNEP FI and partner bodies. The incumbent will also establish and implement an accreditation policy for UNEP FI’s training and education partners.

Additionally, the Learning and Education Lead will coordinate the monitoring and reporting of UNEP FI’s education and training activities, employing consistent methodological approaches to identify best practices. Building a global network of education partners to support the development of UNEP FI’s education strategy will be a key focus. The incumbent will support the implementation of UNEP FI’s due diligence and risk policy in the context of education and training partnerships.

The role involves developing and expanding the range of education and training offerings across all types of Financial Institutions (FIs) to support initiatives such as the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB), Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), and other relevant initiatives. Collaboration with colleagues across all areas of UNEP FI will be essential to ensure full involvement and consultation on the education and training strategy.

 

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) preferably in Education or a related field combined with education in one of the following: environment, sustainable development, ethics, law or a related field.
  • A first-level university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) in combination with the same preferred fields with an additional two years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a Master’s degree.

 

Experience
Required

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively experience in learning and development.
  • Experience within project or programme management, sustainable finance, education or related area.

Desired

  • Experiences in working with private finance, especially the banking sector.
  • Experience in connecting this work with environmental or ethical considerations.
  • Experience in developing training for a variety of private or public stakeholders in banking services.

Languages
