Due to increasing student numbers in 2024, Worawa Aboriginal College are seeking Learning Support Staff (Teacher’s Aides) for a Term 1 start.

Located on a beautiful 136 acre property in the Yarra Valley (60 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD), Worawa Aboriginal College is a boarding school for Aboriginal girls in their secondary years of schooling. An Aboriginal initiative, Worawa is an Independent school, owned and governed by Aboriginal people, and operates on a philosophy of ‘Walking Together to Make a Difference’.

A full boarding school, Worawa was established as a response to the needs of Aboriginal adolescents and the difficulties these young people experience in the mainstream educational system. The diversity of Aboriginal Australia is reflected in the student population drawn from communities across the country.

The Worawa curriculum strongly emphasises foundation studies in literacy and numeracy while providing a breadth and depth of learning experiences across all key disciplines/learning areas. The Worawa Way pedagogy model is based on the Aboriginal values of Relationship, Responsibility, Respect and Rigour that inform all aspects of College operations. Along with the core academic program, emphasis is placed on nurturing and celebrating Aboriginal culture as a crucial aspect of student self-esteem and wellbeing.

This position requires the incumbent to embrace the Worawa ethos of Aboriginal values, Aboriginal led decision making and the right to Aboriginal self-determination.

The Role

The primary responsibility of Learning Support is to provide assistance in the educational program to optimise student learning outcomes. As a valued member of the academic team, Learning Support may work independently with small groups of students or on a one-to-one basis on teaching and learning tasks across the range of year levels, as well as assisting the classroom teacher as required.

The successful candidates must have:

  • Certificate IV in Education Support or equivalent
  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Demonstrated calm and caring demeanour
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport and communicate effectively with students and the College community
  • Strong and versatile teaching and/or support skills and the ability to adapt to suit the needs of individual students including EAL/D.
  • Working knowledge of Victorian Department of Human Services and other legislative Child Safety, Mandatory Reporting and Duty of Care requirements (to be gained within 6 months of appointment if not current)
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Current Working with Children Check and Police Check

Desirable:

  • Experience in a learning support role or similar would be highly regarded.
  • Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training.
  • Experience working with the Aboriginal community and a demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the diversity of Aboriginal cultures and issues affecting the Aboriginal community.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
