Job description

YOUR TIME CAN CHANGE LIVES!

For 25 Years EdConnect has been working with amazing members of our community who want to give their time and knowledge to support students in learning and life at local primary and secondary schools. Through giving one hour a week in a learning support or mentor role EdConnect volunteers help raise literacy and numeracy levels with at risk students, build social and academic confidence in students and support students to remain engaged in education, giving them a brighter future.

In 2022, over 250 EdConnect volunteers in Victoria supported over 6000 students. Due to increased school demand, we need 150 additional volunteers in 2024 to support new and existing schools, classes and students.

Roles are available in Metro Melbourne (West, North, South-East), Geelong, Colac, Shepparton and Numurkah.

Learning Support volunteers understand the importance of education and want to support students to achieve their potential. Learning Support volunteers provide caring support, a listening ear, and help to make learning more fun.

  • Help students within the classroom environment
  • One-on-one reading or specific literacy programs
  • Other education programs including art, woodwork or cooking
  • Breakfast Club
  • Lunchtime groups or activities
  • Library, canteen or office
  • Sports days and events
  • Minor school improvements like gardening, painting or sewing

We ask Learning Support volunteers to commit for a minimum of six months to the program, and a minimum of one hour per week.

Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship between a student and a caring adult who offers guidance, support and encouragement.  A mentor is a reliable, adult role model who uses their life experience and listening skills to support a student who is at risk of not achieving their educational potential.

Mentors spend one hour, once a week with a student.  We ask volunteer Mentors to commit a minimum of one year to the program.

They build a relationship by enjoying fun activities or just talking. EdConnect mentors are trained to provide developmental mentoring which includes listening, building confidence and deciding on activities together.

Mentoring takes place in school hours and on school grounds so that school staff can provide support.

REQUIREMENTS FOR BOTH ROLES

  • Must be available during school hours – one hour minimum per week for the school term
  • Must be aged 18 years or over
  • Australian citizen or resident or visa that entitles you to live and work in Australia
  • Strong English language skills – written and verbal
  • Must be willing to obtain a Working with Children Check (and National Criminal History Check if in Western Australia)

Please note: We do not offer short-term, community service or one-off volunteering opportunities – ongoing support to students is our priority. Our students need a consistent adult in their lives to provide ongoing support. It takes time to build a trusting relationship so by committing to a long-term role, you and the student will benefit greatly.

Applications for this role will take you to the employer’s site.
