Job Summary
The Lewis Honors College at the University of Kentucky seeks a Lecturer for a nine-month appointment, non-tenure eligible position. This 9-month assignment period position will be responsible for teaching six courses per academic year (typically three per semester) of Honors-level courses at the undergraduate level. Usually, two courses per semester will be the Foundations Seminar, HON 140: Knowledge and Society (same prep); and the third course will be an Honors course in the Lecturer’s discipline. All courses are seminars capped at 25 students. The anticipated start date is Fall 2024 term.
HON 140: Knowledge and Society is a 3 credit, foundational Honors seminar required of all incoming honors freshmen. The course helps students develop an understanding of the pursuit of truth and knowledge; how disciplinary and other lenses shape those pursuits; and how to discern the assumptions, premises, and expectations of variant claims to knowledge and truth. By exploring the links between subjective and social phenomena, students gain a clearer understanding of the way inquiry and curiosity are implicated in our familial, cultural, historical, and political worlds. Knowledge and Society invites students to (re)imagine their identity as agents in an interconnected and ever-expanding global context.
In addition to teaching HON 140, the Lecturer will develop undergraduate honors courses that ask broadly relevant and compelling questions that arise from the Lecturer’s area of expertise and that will help students fulfill the University of Kentucky’s general education requirements (“UK Core”). The Lecturer position may also include responsibilities for student programming and other college service on an as-needed basis. Typically, the distribution of effort will be 75% teaching, 18% service to the college, 5% research/scholarship, and 2% professional development and is reviewed and modified as needed each year.
