The Department of Psychology within the School of Psychology and Sport Science seeks to further develop its world-leading teaching and research profile by the appointment of an academic in psychology. We particularly encourage applications from candidates with a background and experience in Forensic Psychology. The post holder will have a profile commensurate with a lectureship position, including experience of teaching at a Higher Education Institution.

 

The appointed person will be expected to contribute to relevant undergraduate and postgraduate programme provision within the Department of Psychology and will deliver high-quality innovative teaching and supervision. The post holder will have a developing teaching and scholarship profile commensurate with a Grade 7 lecturer. The post holder should also possess a desire to develop student employability, applied competency and readiness for work. The appointed person will be expected to contribute to pastoral support, recruitment and retention activities, and the candidate should have a desire to promote the School through outreach and public engagement activity. Candidates should ideally possess relevant teaching qualifications or experience.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to commence in June / July 2024 (or as soon as possible thereafter)

 

The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable for this post.

 

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework , there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Overview

The School of Psychology and Sport Science houses two of Bangor University’s high performing departments: the Department of Psychology, and the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Our world-leading research spans cognitive neuroscience, clinical interventions, psychological wellbeing, elite performance, physical activity, and health and applied human physiology. In the recent Research Excellence Framework Exercise, 86% of Psychology outputs were rated as either 3* or 4*. The Department of Psychology was also ranked 17th in the UK for the societal impact of its research.

 

Our research-inspired teaching is led by a well-established teaching team, comprising of PhD qualified academics with a focus on teaching, learning, student care and the student experience. The team, which includes two National Teaching Fellows and staff accredited by Advance HE from Fellow to Principal Fellow, lead on pedagogic innovations within the School. The curricula include a wide portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and offers a clear and progressive ‘pathway’ model of education to enable students to travel from undergraduate studies through to the postgraduate opportunities which will make them competitive in a wide range of professional contexts (from Masters, PhD, to DClinPsy, to a multitude of graduate careers). Purpose of the Job

· To teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of projects, placements, and students.

· To provide pastoral, academic and vocational support to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

· To undertake administrative duties as designated by the Head of School.

 


Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching and Scholarship duties will include:

 

Teaching duties will include:

• Plan, prepare and deliver teaching to a range of class sizes, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds and ensuring the implementation of inclusive practice.

• Motivate students to proactive engagement in learning and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work.

• Act as a personal tutor to several undergraduate and postgraduate students.

 

Scholarship duties will include:

• Maintain and develop scholarly activities in line with University and College strategies. • Disseminate evidence of scholarship related to learning and teaching in books, papers in academic journals and/or conferences.

• Engage in scholarly and other relevant professional activities (e.g., reviewer and/or referee for academic journals, produce scholarly outputs, contribute to academic teaching and / or research conferences)

 

Administrative and Wider Contribution duties will include:

• Participate in the student recruitment, induction, and retention procedures of the School (e.g., University Open Days, outreach events).

• To contribute to the promotion and external profile of the School

• Contribute to the School’s management and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g., organisation of exams, contribute to accreditation/QA procedures (if module co-ordinator).

• Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.

• Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School (e.g., membership of School boards and task groups, addressing/supporting undergraduate and post graduate student experience, peer review of student research proposals).

• The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

• Ensure continued development of personal knowledge and skills to ensure that teaching reflects current best practice.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

 

Essential:

 

  • PhD or Professional Doctorate or equivalent industry qualification in a relevant subject area (or close to completion).

 

Desirable:

 

  • Professional accreditation and / or equivalent professional status inc., chartered psychologist with the British Psychological Society (forensic) and / or registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a practitioner psychologist (forensic) Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCertHE) or be close to the completion or recognised by the HEA as a Fellow / Recognised by Advance HE as a Fellow against Descriptor 2 of the UKPSF.

 

Experience/Knowledge:

 

Essential:

 

  • Experience of teaching forensic psychology at higher education level or equivalent.
  • Experience of supervising and / or demonstrate an ability to supervise forensic psychology undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects.

 

Desirable:

 

Experience of module development and delivery in higher education Evidence of scholarly activity relating to learning and teaching Evidence of good / innovative pedagogic practice.

 

Skills/Abilities:

 

Essential:

 

Ability to develop innovative and exciting approaches to teaching. Ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on own initiative. Excellent verbal and written skills. Demonstrable IT Skills as required (e.g., VLE techniques and other forms of learning technologies).

 

Desirable:

 

Evidence of external networking and profile-raising. Ability to develop and use online teaching materials.
