The Department of Microbiology has fourteen active research laboratories. It serves as the home Department for the Graduate Field of Microbiology (with ~50 affiliated faculty members) and provides a center of expertise for numerous aspects of microbial biology. The faculty and staff offer advanced courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. This new 3-credit course will be held in the Fall and Spring semesters.

Learning outcomes for the Ethics in the Life Sciences course will include the ability to demonstrate ethical awareness, engage in ethical reflection, and apply ethical principles in decision-making. Therefore, the course design must engage innovative methods of teaching the general foundations of ethical thinking to be applied to specific cases in the life sciences.

What You Will Do

As the Lecturer in Ethics in the Life Sciences, you will design, direct, and serve as the instructor for a high-enrollment, innovative course to satisfy a new ethics requirement for undergraduates in CALS and should cover content applicable to the breadth of CALS majors, especially the biological, agricultural, environmental sciences. Additionally, you will prepare materials for all course meetings, including methods to engage students in active learning. You will be responsible for authoring all course assessments while considering the diverse learning styles that students bring. Other duties include:

  • Leading the evaluation of all course assessments as the instructor of record, including developing clear rubrics, training teaching assistants, and grading.
  • Collaborating with life science faculty to create case studies for utilization in class as active learning instruments.
  • Updating course materials often to keep pace with the most critical ethical issues in the life sciences.
  • Developing methods that allow for responsiveness to a large number of enrolled students.
  • Mentoring and supervising Teaching Assistants
  • Being present and a student-facing member of the life science faculty.
  • Holding office hours for meeting with students.

What We Need

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who will bring an innovative approach to the classroom. We need someone who can build rapport with students and excel at building relationships with faculty and staff. Additionally, we need someone who will remain up to date with cutting-edge and emerging topics across CALS’s diverse life sciences disciplines and center ethics lectures and case studies around these areas. Other requirements include:

  • Master’s degree in Life Sciences
  • Experience in teaching college-level courses.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students.

If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you!  There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:

  • Doctorate degree or advanced coursework preferred.
  • Evidence of pedagogy development in ethics.

This is a full-time (40 hours/week) 9-month academic-year appointment. This is a three-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.

Pay Range:

$49,700.00 – $122,000.00

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
