The Institute of Science and Environment is seeking to recruit a Lecturer in
Forestry who has broad knowledge of forestry from a practical and/or academic perspective. We
would particularly welcome applications from candidates with experience of forest management
and with strong links to the forestry sector. This could be an opportunity for an industry
professional looking for a career change or a new challenge to share their experience and
skills with our students. We would be happy to consider job share/part time applications for
this post. Prior experience of teaching in higher education is not essential. For those new to
teaching, the University offers a PgC in Learning and Teaching for Higher Education.

The National School of Forestry, situated within IoSE, has been delivering applied professional
forestry courses for over 50 years and has a growing portfolio of research and knowledge
exchange projects with colleagues in the wider Institute. We have strong links to the sector
and its professional bodies. You will join our forestry team which comprises a combination of
forestry academics and those with a professional forest management background, enabling us to
blend theory, forestry research, and real-world application throughout our provision. We
deliver professional forestry courses at undergraduate level (BSc and Degree Apprenticeship)
and are keen to continue developing our portfolio of courses to meet the needs of the
profession in this country and internationally, responding to social, economic and
environmental forces in the forestry sector.

You will join in the delivery of our existing programmes and contribute to the design and
delivery of future planned postgraduate and CPD developments, making the most of the
opportunities offered by our location at the University’s Ambleside campus.

The Institute of Science and Environment is one of five Institutes within the University. It is
a busy and vibrant Institute which has strong links with a number of professional bodies and
employers which is reflected in the high level of employment our students enjoy.

The Institute is split across two sites, Ambleside and Carlisle, to suit the academic portfolio
and delivery needs of our programmes. The academic portfolio provides a range of undergraduate
programmes including Forest Management, Woodland Ecology and Conservation, Professional
Forester Degree Apprenticeship, Outdoor Leadership, Outdoor Education, Geography, and a range
of Conservation programmes at our Ambleside Campus and Biomedical Science, Forensic Science,
Environmental Science and Zoology at our Carlisle Campus. Additionally, we have a developing
postgraduate taught provision and a growing postgraduate research community.

The University and Institute are committed to providing a supportive and collaborative working
environment for all staff. There is a comprehensive programme of staff development for academic
staff and all colleagues are encouraged to enhance and develop their careers.

We offer an attractive benefits package including 35 days’ annual leave plus statutory bank
holidays, 25 research and scholarly activity days, support for professional development,
support to achieve Advance HE accreditation of your teaching, mentor provision in your first
year of employment and opportunity for career development. For more information please
