About the opportunity

We are seeking a culturally passionate Lecturer in Indigenous Health in the Faculty of Medicine and Health that can make a significant contribution to teaching and learning design, delivery, and evaluation in their specialised field while also continuing to build substantial research contribution, expertise, connections, and impact.

This role is focused on embedding First Nations histories, cultural protocols and ways of doing, being and sharing knowledge into the Faculty’s curricula, and will provide key leadership in helping the University of Sydney achieve its ambitions under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Plan 2022-2024 and the University’s One Sydney, Many People Strategy.

The appointee to this role will engage with professional development and build the capability to lead change and improve teaching and research at the University.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Design and engage in high-quality teaching and learning experiences which meet the University’s expectations and standards for education
  • Deliver outstanding teaching and learning outcomes for students, by ensuring all students hold foundational knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues relevant to their discipline and/or area of study
  • Develop teaching and subject materials under the supervision of more senior academic staff within the school/faculty.
  • Through research and scholarly creative work, contribute to knowledge within your discipline or area of expertise
  • Develop and refine your research skills
  • Maintain quality, standards and excellence in your research activities and output
  • Contribute to the governance, leadership, and engagement work in your school.

About you

Successful candidates will have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, facilitating and guiding their learning in research, theory and laboratory sessions. They will also have the capacity to build a significant research program over time, obtaining competitive funding as needed to support their research work.

In addition to the above candidates progressed for these positions will hold the below listed qualities/ qualifications and can integrate their cultural knowledge towards supporting the development of culturally competent and inclusive teaching and will contribute to the First Nations leadership in the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures, including an understanding of the issues affecting people in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Who has or is near completion of a PhD, Master of Philosophy in Public Health, professional masters and/or relevant experience in fields related to Indigenous Health, including but not limited to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social and Emotional Wellbeing
  • Expertise in Indigenous health promotion ability to carry out quality research in the relevant discipline
  • Deliver high quality teaching that effectively engages students in their learning
  • Independently conduct and publish high quality research relevant to the School’s existing strengths
  • Provided outstanding research training (e.g. honours/PhD)
  • High quality communication and organisational skills
  • Contributed to governance, leadership, and engagement within the School/University
  • worked collaboratively with other staff, including professional staff, and foster principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.
