Position description

The Department of War Studies wishes to appoint a Lecturer in International Relations Education. This is a one-year, fixed- term position from April 2024 to April 2025.  

Appointments to the Academic Education Pathway (AEP) are focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship and leadership in education.  The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of teaching on the Department of War Studies and Department of  Defence Studies’ joint online MA programmes in Global Security and International Affairs.

Teaching duties will include delivering online webinars on the MA Global Security and MA International Affairs’ core and optional modules*.*

The postholder will also undertake and publish high-quality scholarship and play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of War Studies and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required.    

Applicants must have a PhD.

Key responsibilities

  • Undertake teaching on the online MA programmes Global Security and International Affairs.
  • Contribute to innovation in pedagogical practices. 
  • Act as personal tutor to students as agreed with the Senior Tutor and assist with difficulties, e.g. learning support problems.
  • Participate fully in assessment and examination processes as appropriate using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
  • Undertake high-quality scholarship in the subject area, publish the findings in highly rated internationally recognised journals, and participate in the major internationally recognised academic networks.
  • Engage in professional development as appropriate.
  • Accept academic responsibility within the Department and School, involving departmental administrative responsibilities in respect of student services, student recruitment and advice as well as participating in aspects of School governance on School committees.
  • Deliver and assess modules through e-learning.
  • Supervise and mark MA dissertations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on implementation of assessment procedures.
  • Contribute to accreditation and quality control processes.
  • Ensure student needs and expectations are met.
  • Manage projects relating to own area of scholarship.
  • Take responsibility for administrative duties such as admissions, recruitment, examinations, attendance, etc.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria

1.      PhD awarded in International Relations or another relevant subject. 

2.      Experience of teaching postgraduate students. 

3.      Experience of interacting with a wide variety of non-academic stakeholders  

4.      Established communication skills, both oral and written. 

5.      Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

6.      Familiarity with innovative curriculum and teaching design practices and pedagogies. 

7.      Commitment to contributing to diversity and inclusion efforts. 

Desirable criteria

1.      Excellent organizational skills. 

2.      Experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students online. 

3.      A track record of wider administrative contribution to the delivery of departmental activities.
