The Institute of Science and Environment is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic
lecturer in outdoor learning with knowledge and experience in outdoor education and the ability
to teach outdoor activities.
We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated individual, keen to join an enthusiastic team
with a passion for creating transformational learning experiences. You will be integral to the
delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as keen to contribute to
future developments. You will have an interest in research specifically within the area of
outdoor education and/or learning. Candidates should hold a relevant first and/or higher degree
and have a genuine ability to facilitate learning in diverse contexts (class and field based).
You will join a successful, practical and research informed teaching team with a reputation for
innovation in course design and development. Prior experience in teaching in higher education
is not essential. For those new to teaching, the University offers a PgC in Learning and
Teaching for Higher Education. You will be joining a team of dedicated outdoor enthusiasts from
a range of discipline areas to support a thriving undergraduate and postgraduate portfolio
including BA (Hons) Outdoor Education, BA(Hons) Outdoor & Experiential Learning, BSc (Hons)
Outdoor Adventure & Environmental Studies, BA(Hons) Outdoor Leadership, and MA Outdoor
& Experiential Learning. A developing doctoral and post-doctoral research environment
focuses on outdoor education, sense of place, therapeutic applications, and broader ecological
and environmental management of outdoor resources.
The Institute of Science and Environment is one of five Institutes within the University. It is
a busy and vibrant Institute which has strong links with a number of professional bodies and
employers that is reflected in the high level of employment our students enjoy.
The Institute is split across two sites, Ambleside and Carlisle, to suit the academic portfolio
and delivery needs of the programmes. The academic portfolio provides a range of undergraduate
programmes including Outdoor Leadership, Outdoor Education, Geography, Forestry and a range of
Conservation programmes at our Ambleside Campus and Biomedical Science, Forensic Science and
Zoology at our Carlisle Campus. Additionally, we have a developing postgraduate taught
provision and a growing postgraduate research community. Our Outdoor programmes are delivered
from Ambleside campus in the Heart of the Lake District National Park and UNESCO World Heritage
Site.
