Lecturer – Midwifery (Teaching & Research)

The School of Healthcare Sciences provides a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate education that directly improves health outcomes and healthcare for patients and families. This includes education programmes and research in Midwifery; Nursing (Adult, Child and Mental Health); Occupational Therapy; Physiotherapy; Clinical Photography; Operating Department Practice; and Radiography (diagnostic and oncology).

We are designated by the World Health Organisation as  Collaborating Centre for Midwifery Development – one of only two such specific centres globally.

Candidates should have an established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant clinical experience within research fields relevant to Midwifery; a passion for student focussed innovative learning and teaching; experience of teaching in a HEI; and possess a PhD degree. The successful candidate will be employed on the University Teaching and Research career pathway. 

All candidates must have current Midwifery registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The School of Healthcare Sciences have two positions available, 1 FTE (35 Hours) and 1 (0.5 fte) – 17.5 hours per week.

Salary:
£39,347 – £44,263 per annum, pro rata (Grade 6) or
£49,794 – £54,395 per annum, pro-rata (Grade 7) 

Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Job Description

To deliver high-quality and research-led teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to the research record of the School through commitment to carrying out research leading to the publishing of work in high-quality journals. To pursue excellence in research, teaching and enterprise and to inspire others to do the same.

Teaching

  • To design and deliver teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team.

Grade 7: independently contribute to module and course development and lead modules

  • To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work, and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University.
  • To inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
  • To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGR’s.
  • To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students.
  • Act as an Academic Assessor in line with the Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (NMC, 2018).

Grade 7: Acts as a PGR progress review panel member as required.

Research

  • To conduct research within Midwifery and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students

Grade 7: contribute to internationally recognised research performance.     

  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals.

Grade 7: independently develop research objectives, acting as PI as required.

  • To give conference/seminar papers at a local and national level.

 Grade 7: present at international level.

  • To participate in School research activities.

Other

  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally  to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.
  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria 

Qualifications and Education

  • Current registration with NMC as a Midwife & Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience.
  • Grade 7: Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience teaching in HEI setting.

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within the following research fields:  Midwifery & Maternal Health
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
  • Knowledge of current status of research in midwifery.
  • Proven ability to publish in national journals.
  • Proven ability to be successful in competitive research funding.
  • Ability to contribute to the delivery and continued development of modules across the Schools teaching programmes.
  • Grade 7: Significant experience of research & teaching, with a strong portfolio of research grants and substantial record of publications in high impact national journals.

    Pastoral, Communication and Team Working

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media.
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
  • Grade 7: Ability to act as module leader and co-ordinate with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met)
