The Opportunity: 

The School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh wishes to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Circular Economy and Sustainability Transformations on an open-ended contract. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with an interdisciplinary approach and skillset who can join our community of geography, environment and sustainability researchers, to undertake teaching and research relating to the Circular Economy and wider field of Sustainability Transformations.  

The successful candidate will have a track record of high-quality research and scholarship and be able to demonstrate the enthusiasm and ability to undertake original cross-disciplinary research. Their research interests might include, though are not limited to, the study of: circular economy practices; conceptualising circular society futures; circular economy in design or business, shaping social attitudes for a circular economy; geographies of resource regeneration, restoration and re-use in action; community driven and collective action models of the circular economy; sharing economies. 

We are looking for an individual who is a committed and enthusiastic teacher, ready to make innovative and high-quality contributions to the MSc degree programme in Circular Economy in partnership with the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI). EFI programmes are delivered in a distinctive teaching/learning model which includes simultaneous on-campus and online delivery (‘fusion teaching’), in teaching spaces and digital learning environments designed to enable on-site/online sharing of all teaching and learning activity. For the MSc in Circular Economy degree programme, the role will include elements of course delivery, assessment and organisation, cohort leadership, supervision of dissertations and graduate research projects. It may also include creating a new optional course in a circular economy related topic to compliment the suite of option courses on the MSc Circular Economy. Making connections with the wider community of circular economy professionals within business, government, NGOs and think-tanks will also be key to establishing a long-term, vibrant and attractive MSc offering.  

Applicants will also have the ability to contribute to the wider teaching provision within the School of Geosciences’ suite of environmental PGT degree programmes, or the undergraduate MA Geography programme. The role may also encompass other contributions to School citizenship and administration.  

Your skills and attributes for success:  

  • A PhD in a relevant area or equivalent professional experience, skills and knowledge in the domain of Circular Economy and Sustainability Transformations. 
  • A track record of delivering high quality research and academic publications in the field of Circular Economy extending into broader questions of Sustainability Transformations  
  • Experience teaching in an interdisciplinary programme in a higher education setting and assessing student performance  
  • Knowledge of current teaching and learning methods in higher education  
  • Experience of research and teaching in the area of Circular Economy and Sustainability Transformations
