Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Registry of the United Nations Dispute Tribunal (UNDT) in New York, which is a part of the Office of Administration of Justice (OAJ). The UNDT is a tribunal established to review appeals against administrative decisions. The incumbent reports to the Registrar of the UNDT. This internship is for a minimum of three months and up to six months. The programme is normally full-time, i.e. an Intern is expected to work five days per week (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) for a total of 35 hours per week. Our Interns work as full team members, pursue projects designed to make a significant difference in UNDT and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the period during which he/she will undertake the internship. The UNDT is seeking highly motivated graduate students who wish to gain professional experience in an international organization. During this three to six month internship, Interns will have opportunities to broaden their experience and knowledge about the international administrative law and the internal justice system of the United Nations. The internship offers a practical educational experience and allows Interns to work in a multicultural intergovernmental organization. Responsibilities The Intern will provide legal and paralegal support to the Registry. Duties will include: • Assisting in conducting legal research for use by Legal Officers and Judges in connection with review of cases; • Assisting in drafting summaries of Judgments for publication on the OAJ case law portal; • Assisting in summarizing facts and parties’ contentions for consideration by the Judges; • Editing, proof-reading, formatting and otherwise finalizing Judgments, Orders and other documents; • Assisting in the organizational and logistical preparation of hearings; • Helping to maintain databases and files, including in the electronic Court Case Management System and SharePoint. Before completing this internship, the Intern will prepare a brief report and make a presentation on the experience gained. The Intern may also be asked to assist in the day-today work of OAJ if required. The Intern is expected to familiarize him/herself, to a limited extent, with the administrative work of OAJ and other tasks that are typical of UN organizations.
Qualifications/special skills
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant (such as F1 visa) status, will be required to obtain a G4 visa. Interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization (CPT/OPT), allowing them to undertake the internship. Terms of the internship programme: -The minimum duration of this internship is three months which can be extended up to a total period of six months. -Interns are expected to work on a full-time or part-time basis in the entity that has selected them, under the supervision of a staff member at an appropriate level. The working hours will be discussed with your supervisor at the time of the interview. Internships may be undertaken on the basis of flexible working arrangements if: -The receiving entity agrees in writing to accept an intern on the basis of flexible working arrangements. -Interns agree that they are required to work the equivalent of a minimum of at least two months on a full-time basis or four months on a part-time basis in order to receive recognition of service as an intern. An internship under such arrangements must be completed within a six-month period. -A record of attendance shall be maintained by the receiving entity in order to ensure that the intern meets this requirement. -Interns serving in one entity do not have a right to transfer to another entity. -Full provisions related to the conditions and terms of the United Nations Internship Programme can be accessed on the following link: https://undocs.org/ST/AI/2020/1 .
