This position is located in the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran (FFM Iran), pursuant to Human Rights Council Resolution A/HRC/RES/55/19, based in Geneva. The incumbent reports to the Legal Advisor of the Fact-Finding Mission on Iran.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority the Legal Officer / Case Manager will be responsible for the following duties connected to the collection of information and evidence: •Handles a range of issues related to international criminal (substantive, procedural and comparative) law, including the interpretation and application of constitutive, legislative, and other instruments governing United Nations activities and operations. •Participates in the development and implements collection and investigation plans including the definition of parameters and timetables of collection and investigation activities. • Supervises the intake and proper storage of materials collected until they are registered and processed and ensures the secure preservation of the material collected, that proper chain of custody is kept, and that measures are in place for the protection of victims and witnesses. •Assists in relation to the oversight of coding of documents and other material entered into the e-discovery system and other relevant databases. •Assists in conducting research of material collected by the Mission in order to respond to requests for assistance from external accountability processes. •Conducts extensive legal research and analysis and prepare studies, comparative studies, briefs, reports and correspondence. •Undertakes basic or extensive review of legal documents, instruments or other material. •Prepares or assists in the preparation of drafts of background papers, studies, reports and requests for information. •Prepares or assists in the negotiation and preparation of agreements with governments, NGOs and other public and private entities. •Assesses evidence for relevance and admissibility and prepares briefs of evidence. •Provides guidance to more junior staff. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
A first level university degree in law and an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in law are required. For the advanced university degree in law, specialization in international, criminal or humanitarian law is desirable. A first-level university degree in law, in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree in law.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in law, including legal analysis, research and writing on international criminal law, is required A minimum of three years of work experience in an international criminal court or international accountability mechanism, or in a national court or tribunal dealing with international crimes is required. Experience working on Human Rights Investigations is desirable. Experience in the use of case management databases, including e-discovery systems, is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat, for this position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Persian is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
