The Prevention Division aims to reduce the risk of cancer in the Victorian population through social marketing, advocacy, professional education and providing policy advice based on the best available evidence. This involves action to affect individual behaviours and the broader physical and legislative environment to support health and wellbeing.

Tobacco in Australia: Facts and Issues provides Australian academics, the media, policy specialists and political and departmental policy-makers with the up-to-date and policy-relevant synthesis of facts, data and descriptions of program and legislative developments they need to ensure the earliest possible adoption of the most effective possible tobacco control measures in Australia.

About your opportunity

We are seeking a Legal Research Assistant to join the Tobacco in Australia: Facts and Issues team.

  • Reporting to the Research & Policy Manager, Tobacco in Australia: Facts & issues, your role is to:
  • Add to EndNote library collections by sourcing relevant new and amended tobacco legislation and journal articles, and creating and editing EndNote references
  • Assist with organisation of EndNote library databases, ensuring label systems are up-to-date and consistent, and duplicate references are eliminated
  • Manage Excel databases with detailed spreadsheets documenting legislation around Australia by State and Territory
  • Assist with written updates for website content related to Australia’s tobacco control legislation

All about you

We are looking for someone currently undergoing (second year or later) or recently completed a bachelors (or higher) degree in law or a related field of study with:

  • Excellent legal research skills, with a desire to learn about the field of tobacco control. A demonstrated interest in public health and/or social justice would be ideal
  • Proficient experience in EndNote X9
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office suite—Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good organisation skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to take direction and apply instructions to a variety of tasks
