About the opportunity 

The Library Collections Assistant will assist with a range of collection maintenance tasks including barcode scanning, labelling, data entry and shelf cleaning according to set time frames. This position will participate in a range of day to day and special project activities to ensure that the physical collections are maintained to acceptable standards.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • maintain shelf order in the collections, carry out shelf tidying and cleaning and assist with moves of the collections

  • perform end processing of physical items to ensure they meet minimum standards for inclusion in the collections, including the completion of tasks such as placing labels, barcodes and security tags on material, operating associated equipment, and other tasks as required

  • participate in the repair and rehousing of physical items, in accordance with archival standards

  • prepare items for collection projects and stocktaking by performing inventory control processes (including shelf inspection, item record checks, and data entry).

  • display familiarity and confidence in the use of technologies related to work activities.

  • work effectively with team to accomplish team goals and take actions that respect the needs and contributions of others.

  • learn new tasks quickly; be open to suggesting and promoting new ideas and produce workable solutions to problems

  • quickly escalate problems that cannot be resolved to supervisor

  • participate in meetings, working groups and projects including collection review activities in order to assist in meeting the objectives of the Library

  • assist with logistic support; this may include stationery, receipt and transport of books and other materials to and from locations, event set up, and other duties consistent with classification.

About you

  • previous experience with spreadsheet, stocktaking, scanning barcodes would be advantageous but not essential

  • ability to manage time effectively, demonstrating initiative and attention to detail

  • ability to work as an effective member of a team

  • good oral and written communication skills.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
