Position Summary:

Under the administrative direction of the Snr. Manager Library Services and the professional guidance of the Librarians, and Library Co-ordinators, the incumbent performs a variety of academic support and technical service functions associated with the operation of the Library Learning Commons.

Key Responsibilities:

– Provides reference information and research assistance online and in-person.
– Demonstrates the formulation of a search in multiple sources and a variety of media that includes books, journals and periodicals, electronic databases, e-books and e-journals, videos, etc.
– Using specific platforms for video or online chat, provide online reference service to support queries from students across 13 colleges.
– Participate in the Reference Cluster Team at a designated campus, e.g. WF. Play a role in facilitating and convening meetings on a rotational basis, follow up on team action items, contribute to brainstorming to plan and execute engagement activities.
– Provide orientation to new students by participating in library online programs, or plan with the library team to run in-person activities, and service fairs.
– Update the Reserve collection at Daniels and WF purchasing books from the bookstore when needed, processing reserve materials for circulation, and updating records in the catalogue.
– On a daily basis, collect and check in books from the book return bins.
– Print the hold requests daily, locate the relevant books on the shelf and prepare them for the holds shelf.
– Check-in new issues of journals, entering the necessary information to update the catalog record and when necessary, instate a claim for unreceived issues.
– Check-in and process incoming journal issues with library labels and stamps.
– Shelve incoming issues and annually weed old issues according to library policy and shift up collections.
– Process incoming and outgoing Interlibrary Loan Requests
– Assist Librarians during library instruction.
– Other duties as assigned.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

– Two-year diploma or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution in Library and Information Technician.
– Three (3) years of experience with delivery of reference services in a hybrid environment (online and in-person).
– Knowledge of library databases and collections in program areas offered at GBC.
– Experience with development and delivery of library promotion events.
– Basic knowledge of cataloguing and classification processes.
– Knowledge of library platforms such as the LSP; Chat services, EbscoNet.
– Knowledge of processes to maintain serials and reserve book collections.
– Experience with Inter-library loans processes.
– Intermediate knowledge of office applications, Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, Zoom and Slack.

Skills and Attributes:

– Excellent written and oral communication skills and a solid customer/public service focus.
– Good planning, organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
– Ability to take initiative and work effectively in teams.
– Ability to lift between 20 kg and 44 lbs (i.e., mail, boxes, books, supplies, etc.).
– Demonstrated collaboration and interpersonal skills at a professional level.
– Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College’s priorities on diversity and equity.
