Our market leading Local Government Practice seeks Local Authority Defence Lawyers;

We are looking for an NQ Solicitor to join our team in Birmingham or Leicester.

Your primary role will be to provide assistance to senior case handlers in the Casualty team whilst running a small caseload of your own. The work is for local authorities, covering their full range of the services from social care claims (abuse & neglect) to Fast Track claims. This interesting work includes Inquiries and Inquests.

The roles will involve assisting senior lawyers on wide variety of complex cases. Your work will include:

Manage a caseload of litigated files including Highways Law, Occupiers Liability Employers Liability, and Housing disrepair

Analysing records and preparing chronologies of key information and dates

Using Dunn v Durham to decide information to redact

Using software to sort electronic documents into date order and removing duplication

Achieving set financial and chargeable targets

Working as part of a team

Supporting the team’s business development activities

You will also ensure that you comply with the relevant Weightmans and client policies and procedures, and consistently work in accordance with our values.

About You

You will have previous claims handling experience and a genuine and demonstrable interest in social care work. As the role is varied, we are looking for you to have a flexible approach to the work you do and be able to adapt to different tasks. We also require you to have/be

  • NQ Solicitor
  • Preferably experience of defending litigated claims but candidates who have Claimant litigation experience will also considered
  • Excellent knowledge of the CPR and litigation
  • Ability to influence a broad range of people including key decision makers
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and concentration
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines and targets
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  • Knowledge of CPR procedure with proven technical ability.
  • Flexible approach to work and a willingness to travel

This can be a document heavy role and prior experience analysing, redacting and preparing large bundles is an advantage
