Local Wildlife Sites Officer

We’re looking for a Local Wildlife Site Officer to increase the extent of Local Wildlife Sites
(LWS) and Sites of Interest for Nature Conservation (SINC) across Powys, by working closely
with neighbouring wildlife trusts, the recording centre and the local authorities. This
involves using existing datasets, surveying of new sites, and producing reports for
consideration by the Powys LWS Partnership; as well as providing advice on habitat management
to enhance biodiversity and increase potential of sites for future LWS status.

Overall purpose

• Increase the extent of Local Wildlife Sites (LWS) and Sites of Interest for Nature
  Conservation (SINC) across Powys, working closely with Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust (MWT) and
  the Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales (WTSWW). This involves making use of existing
  datasets, as well as surveys of new sites, running these data through the Powys LWS Criteria,
  and producing reports for consideration by the Powys LWS Partnership.
• Provide land managers with advice on habitat management to enhance biodiversity and
  increase potential of sites for future LWS status; liaise with landowners of existing LWS sites
  around management.
• Working with the Biodiversity Information Service for Powys & Brecon Beacons National
  Park (BIS), develop process for mapping LWS and SINC, including integration into the 30 by 30
  strategy and monitoring in Powys.

Main responsibilities

• Prepare potential new site reports and put them forward for consideration at the Powys LWS
  Partnership meetings every 6 months.
• Where necessary, carry out follow up surveys on existing LWS/SINC to collect up to date
  data and condition assessment.
• Survey potential new sites, targeting the most vulnerable habitats (e.g. species-rich
  grassland, wetlands), by making use of the potential SINC maps, existing data and local
  knowledge.
• Work with county recorders and volunteers to expand data collection across Powys and
  identify new sites with LWS/SINC potential.
• Work with colleagues across the trust, including the Farm Cluster team, to develop a
  strategy for maximising conservation outcomes at LWS/SINC.
• Maintain a geodata set for the sites.
• Develop process for mapping LWS/SINC, including integration into 30 by 30 strategy and
  monitoring in Powys (liaising with BIS).
• Work with relevant staff with the trust, as well as the Powys LWS Partnership members and
  Powys Nature Partnership, to raise awareness about LWS/SINC (e.g. social media, WT newsletters,
  etc.).
