Mandatory Position

This position is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the building as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position This is a Facility Maintenance Technician (Building Trades) at the Journey level with a specialty in Locksmithing. The position is expected to be able to perform all general maintenance work at the journey level. This position may also be given the opportunity to perform/learn another trade discipline either at the contributing or journey level. Tasks may include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction, and design of facility components in assigned buildings.
Minimum Education/Experience Required Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years experience. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Essential Job Duties The FM Technician Mechanical Trades performs under the direction of the Lock Shop supervisor.
Duties include:
1. Possesses locksmith skills to perform work related to FM Tech’s Mechanical trade discipline.
2. Perform all FM Tech Mechanical trade maintenance work at the journey level or higher.
3. Tasks may include but are not limited to maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction, and design of facility components in assigned campus buildings focused on the Locksmith trade discipline
4. This position may also be given the opportunity to perform/learn another trade discipline either at the contributing or journey level.
Other Work Responsibilities 1. Possess basic low voltage electrical skills to troubleshoot access control system
2. Ability to troubleshoot and initiate repairs of campus door and lock issues.
3. Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education 1. Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years’ experience.
2. Minimum of five years experience handling commercial locking systems preferred.
3. Possess strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to provide solutions independently during service visits.
4. Ability to manage preventative maintenance of campus locking systems.
5. Ability to work and perform alone or in groups to accomplish daily tasks.
6. Ability to troubleshoot low-voltage electronic locking hardware.
7. Basic carpentry skills as required to maintain and install locking hardware preferred.
8. A North Carolina Locksmith license or the ability to obtain one within three months is required.
9. Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation, and comprehension) required
10. Effective skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication, however, excellent communication skills are preferred.
11. Computer literate and knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs.
12. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds.
13. Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.
14. The selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications A North Carolina Locksmith license or the ability to obtain one within three months. 
A valid driver’s license. The FM Technician Building Trades operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver’s license upon appointment to the position.
Positions may be required to possess and maintain required certification, licensure, educational level, and/or experience criteria as applicable to the tasks being performed and follow applicable building codes.
