WFP’s efforts are aligned with national priorities (Plan national de développement économique et social 2016-2020 and Programme de référence intérimaire de la transition 2022-2025) and place a particular emphasis on women and youth. This approach also aims to increase national ownership by enhancing institutional capacities.
Food is at the heart of the WFP’s work and the Supply Chain Unit in the Country Office (CO) in Conakry. It results in WFP’s global recognition as the logistics lead in support of the wider humanitarian community through the effective delivery of assistance to vulnerable people. WFP in Guinea responses to these criteria.
The Supply Chain unit of the WFP Country Office in Conakry, Guinea is seeking to fill a Logistics Intern position. While the Intern is expected to work integrated within the supply chain team and to participate in all supply and daily logistics activities, the main duties will consist in the up-date of the Logistics Capacity Assessment format.
The Logistics Capacity Assessment (LCA) contains baseline information on the logistics capacity of countries relevant for humanitarian emergency preparedness and response and are published and hosted on an online platform by WFP for the use of the wider humanitarian community, often recognized as the members of the Global Logistics Cluster.
To become familiar with the supply chain organisation of the Country Office and for an initial period of 2 months, the Intern will be involved in all major phases of the transport and logistics activities. This includes ‘call forwards’, port operations and warehousing, contracting and the organization of transport services to inland and final destinations. Given the importance of this first phase, it can be extended to 3 months if necessary.
During phase I, but mainly the following months, the Intern will be involved with the various units within the WFP Office in Conakry, the WFP suboffices, local counterparts, private and public service providers, UN agencies, government- and intergovernmental entities and NGOs partner.
The selected candidate will be assisting the Supply Chain unit of the WFP Guinea Country Office with the following key duties:
Participating in all supply and daily logistics activities, the main duties will consist in the up date of the Logistics Capacity Assessment format.
Supervision:
Under the direct supervision of the National Supply Chain Officer or his/her delegate, the intern will receive hands-on technical supervision, skill development, and mentoring. This includes performance planning, follow-ups, and reviews, as well as learning and development discussions.
Training Components and Learning Elements:
Interns will have access to WFP’s WeLearn platform, offering a wide range of learning opportunities. Depending on availability, participation in one full day orientation session, WFP workshops, seminars, and field missions may be offered. By the end of the assignment, the intern is expected to enhance their performance management skills, data analysis capabilities, understanding of WFP field operations, infographic drafting skills, and interpersonal skills required for working in a dynamic and multicultural environment.
Strong analytical skills, Independent and teamwork capabilities, excellent problem-solving skills, positive attitude, and a keen interest in international humanitarian development. Proficiency in MS Office.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, quick learning and adaptation to UN/WFP processes, analytical and interpretative skills, and the ability to propose solutions.
