UNICEF Sudan is seeking a Long – Term Agreement (LTA), individual consultancy as professional translators to undertake written translations (English to Arabic and vice-versa), simultaneous translation for events, and live translation for field visits. The duration of this assignment will be a period of 3 years.
 
The LTA is being established to serve the needs of all sections in UNICEF Sudan country programme related particularly to translation services to meet the office’s media, advocacy, and fundraising objectives.
 
Scope of Work:
  • Under the guidance of the Communication and Advocacy team, the translator/interpreter consultant will provide high quality translations of UNICEF’s communication materials including but not limited to press releases, booklets, human interest stories, social media posts, reports, papers, briefing notes, subtitles/scripts, proposals, and other materials from English to Arabic, or vice-versa.
  • Translations/simultaneous interpretations to be done keeping in mind culture, gender, and other diverse sensitivities as per UNICEF guidelines.
  • Complete a comprehensive translation of the material provided ensuring clarity and correctness while considering the sensitivity of alternative care jargon and respecting the intentions of the writers and experts.
  • Verify that in the case of longer documents each chapter or section reads well by establishing flowing tones, cohesion, and proper structure and to deliver a final product in a timely manner and of publishable quality.
  • Present at the briefing on specific projects and issues to be covered based on priorities where required.
  • Demonstrate a client-oriented approach, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ensure effective and efficient provision of services, full confidentiality in all aspects of assignment, management of information flow and follow-up on deadlines and commitments made.
  • Translation services will also be required at UNICEF-supported events, conferences, and meetings as and when required.
  • The translator is required to submit their translated work as per UNICEF Stylebook.
  • No google translation submissions will be accepted.
The translation/interpretation services provided shall be:
  • Accurate – reproducing as exactly as possible the meaning of the source text.
  • Natural – using natural forms of the receptor language in a way that is appropriate to the kind of text being translated.
  • Communicative – expressing all aspects of the meaning in a way that is readily understandable to the intended audience.
  • Sensitive – keeping in mind culture, gender, and other sensitivities as per UNICEF guidelines.
  • Confidential – in no event shall the contents of documents or any information known or made known to the translator by reason of its association with UNICEF Sudan be made known by the translator to any unauthorized person without the written approval of UNICEF Sudan. The obligations in this article shall not lapse upon termination of the LTA.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Literature, Marketing, Journalism, Advertising, Creative/technical writing, Public Health, Social Sciences related field. A Diploma in a relevant field with experience can be considered in lieu of the degree. 
  • A minimum of three years of practical professional experience in providing translation and interpretation services to national and international agencies.
  • Familiarity with UN Terminology and UN’s specific acronyms and writing style. Previous working experience with UNICEF is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with online interpretation (using conferencing tools such as Zoom).
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Arabic.
  • Ability to work on demand, multi-task and deliver ahead of tight deadlines.

 

Important considerations:

  • The overall objective is to set up a Long-Term Agreement to facilitate and expedite the process by which UNICEF will hire translator(s) as required for a specific translation task.
  • Whenever translation services are required, details of the requirement/deliverables, including quantities and deadlines, will be presented to the top-ranking LTA holder. Should this consultant not be available for this assignment, UNICEF will contact the second ranked consultant and so on. Upon receipt of confirmation of availability and interest in the assignment, a contract will be issued with the prices/fees agreed in the LTA. The consultant must sign the contract prior commencement of work.
  • Payment will be made after completion of deliverables and submission of invoices for the actual work completed, subject to satisfactory performance.
  • The consultant will use their own equipment; laptops, microphones, software and other accessories that may be required for this task.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws. 

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
