Job Summary:

Lungs Europe is seeking a highly motivated and experienced EU Project Officer to oversee the successful planning, implementation, and delivery of EU-funded projects focused on lung health. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in project management and expertise in lung health research or public health interventions. This individual will be based in Brussels, reporting to the European Lung Foundation Director in Sheffield, UK, and the Director of Advocacy and European Affairs in Brussels, Belgium.

Established in November 2019, Lungs Europe allows two important European organistions – European Lung Foundation (ELF) and European Respiratory Society (ERS) – to work in partnership and with all stakeholders in the respiratory field to drive policy and the regulatory environment in support of lung health at the European level. Lungs Europe is well placed to play a significant role in EU funding programmes and projects related to respiratory health and disease.

ELF is a patient-led organisation that works internationally to bring patients and the public together with healthcare professionals to improve lung health and advance diagnosis, treatment and care.

ERS is the largest scientific and clinical organisation in respiratory medicine in Europe. Its members are scientists, clinicians, allied healthcare professionals and other experts from around the world.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of EU-funded projects focused on lung health from conception to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards;
  • Develop and maintain project plans, including timelines, budgets and resource allocation, to ensure the successful implementation of the project objectives;
  • Coordinate project activities and liaise with project partners and stakeholders, including public health organizations, healthcare providers and patient groups, to ensure effective communication and collaboration;
  • Identify and manage project risks, issues and dependencies, implementing appropriate mitigation strategies where necessary, and ensuring compliance with EU regulations and reporting requirements;
  • Provide regular project updates to senior management and project partners, highlighting any significant issues or risks affecting project delivery;
  • Lead project team meetings and motivate team members to achieve project objectives, ensuring effective communication and collaboration within the project team;
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with project partners and stakeholders, fostering a culture of partnership and collaboration;
  • Manage project finances, including budget tracking, forecasting and reporting, ensuring that project resources are utilized efficiently and effectively;
  • Constantly review and assesses opportunities within EU calls for project applications;
  • Manage and coordinate EU project applications.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree – preferably in a relevant field such as public health, medicine or biomedical sciences;
  • At least 5 years of experience managing EU-funded projects focused on lung health;
  • Strong knowledge of lung health research and implementation, including epidemiology, clinical trials and public health interventions;
  • Excellent project management skills, including planning, budgeting, risk management and stakeholder management;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with project partners and stakeholders;
  • Good grounding in EU rules and regulations regarding report and solid finance skills;
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail;
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential, and proficiency in other European languages is an advantage;
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Office (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
