Job Offer from January 29, 2024
The Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence (MPI-BI) is located in the southwest of Munich, with its two locations in Martinsried and Seewiesen. It is one of more than 80 independent research institutes of the Max Planck Society. With around 500 employees from more than 50 nations, we investigate the fundamentals of “biological intelligence”. We aim to understand how, in the course of evolution, animals developed abilities to cope with a constantly changing environment and to find ever new solutions to problems.
We are looking for Machine Learning Experts (m/f/d) (full-time) with background in machine learning approaches and an interest in applying these to animal behavior.
The departments of Herwig Baier and Bart Kempenaers have teamed up to build a group dedicated to applying computer vision and cutting-edge machine learning methods to behavioral ecology and neuroethology. The focus of our biological research is currently on various bird and fish species, both in the field and in the laboratory.
The positions are well-suited for recent graduates of a computer science program who enjoy coding and interacting with biological datasets. You are expected to have good programming skills in Python, R and/or C++, along with a solid understanding of machine learning libraries like TensorFlow or PyTorch. Experience with computer vision libraries such as OpenCV is a bonus. If interested in pursuing an academic career, your project may become the starting point for a PhD thesis at our institute. We will also consider more senior programmers with a background in industry or academia.
You need good judgment, communication skills, logical thinking, a passion for science, and an eye for details.
